Ok, I know this is ridiculous! I couldn't find anything on here and I don't have much time to look because I have this cake due in a day. I am not a big fan of covering cakes in fondant unless I have to so I am using buttercream. I am making a castle cake and put some buttercream icing with a little bit of black icing coloring in it to make gray. However, it came out like a bluish/lavendarish color!! I learned in my wilton class to leave black food coloring in icing for black icing over night to get a nice black. Could that be the case here? Basically, how do I get gray icing? Any help would be so greatly appreciated!!! Thank you oh so much!!!!! king.gif

That is strange. Try letting it sit and maybe that will help. If not, maybe add just a touch more?

Different blacks are made from a different base color. I find that Americolor's tends to be a little green. Was your buttercream white to start, or is it some shade of off-white (because it has real butter in it, for example)?

add more of the black coloring. It seems there is not enough to off set the white butter cream so the base colors are showing instead! Then breathe icon_smile.gif

I agree. More black with make it look gray icon_smile.gif Not too much though because it will be darker

Give it some time. Wilton black takes a bit to settle in. If you can let it rest for a couple of hours then check again, adding a bit more if needed.
