I know this question has been asked over and over but I figure everyone on this site will understand how difficult it is to choose a business name. I think I have narrowed it down to 3.
Caketopia
Madam Cake
House of Cake

I am from a small town in Ontario Canada. I have done a name search and found a CakeTopia in NY and a House of Cake in Washington. How, if at all, will that effect me if I choose one of those.

I do a lot of fun, whimsical cakes, lots of fondant figures and characters, but I am starting to get into a number of weddings too.

Any suggestions?
Thanks in advance for the advice.

Yeah - that came as a result of the fact that I liked "The Cake Lady", but there is already a successful business of that name in Toronto. I realize now that Madame Cake sounds a little racy!! Ha!

I am really leaning towards Caketopia and I haven't found another one by that name in Canada.

You'll have to do a NUANS search to see if that name is taken. You can do the search online thru various companies but I found that Staples Business Depot search is fast and pretty cheap. You can also do the search thru your local registry office.

You will have to register your business name regardless if you are going to incorporate or remain sole proprietor. At that time, you will have to provide proof that the name is not already taken by someone else in your province.

I love Caketopia so if it's free for the taking, go for it!!!!
