Not serving cake at the wedding never would have flown with my family. If there's not an open bar and free cake, we pretty much don't go anywhere, haha.

I had a similar experience. A friend of mine asked me to make her son's wedding cake. A 3 tier amaretto cake with amaretto filling. It is the piano wedding cake in my pics. Well, they had purchased sheet cakes to be served to go along with the one I made and when it came time to cut the cake, the bride and groom cut a piece and then the reception hall served the sheet cakes only! No one got any of the amaretto cake. There was easily $60.00 worth of liquor in that cake. Then, it took days to find out what actually happened to the cake after that. I finally found out that the bride and groom got the top layer but the kitchen kept the rest of the cake! Can you imagine.

Oh my gosh, I would have thrown a fit about them keeping it. Did they do anything about it?

I had a similar, but thankfully not as extreme, experience last June. I baked a two-tier cake for my son's choir banquet, held at a local Country Club. Because there were a lot more people than originally expected, who RSVP'd the day before the event (!), one of the parents picked up two Costco cakes (white and carrot) to supplement my cake. (I made about 95 servings, and we needed almost double that.)

The Club staff immediately whisked the two Costco cakes to the kitchen, before the event started, and they wanted to do that with mine, too. I asked if that meant they would be moving it back later, before cutting, and they looked at me like I had sprouted horns. "No, we cut it in the kitchen." So...they grudgingly set up a table at the front of the room for the cake to be displayed.

Fast forward to after the meal. They took my cake to the kitchen and then started serving out cake. The people in the first half of the room to be served were given (randomly, unless they got insistent) pieces of the Costco cakes--and the pieces were tiny. (Costco cakes are nowhere near 4" tall, but they still cut the pieces to be about 1" X 1 1/2".) By the time they got to my table, they were serving carrot cake and the white cake from the top tier of my cake. (I snagged a piece of mine, and poor dh was stuck with the carrot cake.) I watched and NEVER saw my chocolate cake being served. I asked after everyone was served, and the server insisted that all cakes had been cut and served. I asked to speak with the manager, and when she checked, she found it wrapped and put away in the employee fridge!

My son took the uneaten bottom tier to school the next morning for the choirs to share, and it vanished just fine.

You don't think they'd heist Costco cake did you? icon_lol.gif J/K...!! Is it any wonder I keep looking in the real estate section for caves located in remote areas? I'm SO sick of (what seems to be the majority, but is actually just a hugely annoying minority) people!!!

Your cake is fabulous!! Love the clean lines.

And just so you know.. If I had been a guest at that wedding.. I WOULD HAVE HAD CAKE !!! Thats the best part of a wedding. I would have been like... excuse me chicky, where's my damn cake? and shoved an empty plate at her, or served it to myself. icon_lol.gif

No cake for me the guest..no present for you. I could use a new toaster anyway. icon_biggrin.gif

WHAT A BEAUTIFUL CAKE! GOSH..HOW DID YOU MAKE THE COUPLE..I'D LOVE TO KNOW STEPS IF YOU HAVE IT AS I'M NOT A PRO EITHER.

AS FAR AS ALL OF THESE COMMENTS GIVEN TO YOU..I FEEL FOR YOU! THAT IS JUST SO SELFISH AND I'M SORRY TO SAY THAT AS IT IS FAMILY TO YOU. BUT COME'ON...GET REAL! I'VE NEVER HEARD OF ANYONE NOT SERVE CAKE FOR THAT REASON..EVER! IF SHE TOLD ME THAT, I WOULD'VE BEGGED HER TO CUT THE CAKE ANYWAYS AS YOU PUT SO MUCH PRECIOUS TIME INTO IT FOR HER! THAT WAY SHE MAY HAVE FELT SOMEWHAT BAD ABOUT NOT CUTTING IT, AND PERHAPS RETHINK IT OVER AND CUT IT EVENTUALLY DURING RECEPTION. SERIOUSLY..I WOULD'VE SAID SOMETHING RIGHT THEN AND THERE..NO WAY WOULD SOMEONE DO THAT TO ME,,,THAT IS UNRESPECTFUL TO YOU BY ALL MEANS. SO SORRY THAT HAPPENED..REDICULOUS..

YOU OTTA SHOW HER YOUR EMBARRASMENT FROM SOME OF THESE COMMENTS PEOPLE STATED AND MAKE HER FEEL BAD SOMEWHAT..IT'S LIKE A SLAP IN THE FACE FOR WHAT SHE DID TO YOU...AND AS FAR AS MONEY GOES,,I HOPE TO GOD THAT YOU DIDN'T DISCOUNT HER!! THAT WOULD BE WORSE!!

I have never heard such a thing. I cannot imagine (as much as I love cake) eating a whole one. Didin't know I would have to check to see if the cake is being served or hoarded by the kitchen staff either. YIKES!

It's a beautiful cake, hard to believe it's your first. You are talented.

Not to go off topic but I had something somewhat similar happen at my wedding but with wine. A dear friend had gone out of his way to buy me a case of a honeymead wine I loved as a wedding gift and we decided to set a bottle on each table for our guest to enjoy. There were several bottles left but after the reception we couldn't find the rest of the wine and just figured our guest loved it as much as I do.
About a year later we were at my in-laws and you can imagine my shock when they told us "oh we have several bottles of the wine from your wedding we brought home to enjoy" I wanted to scream that they took one of our wedding gifts but I just bit my tongue. Some people feel justified in taking anything they want.

I have got one that will make you go crazy about rude guests. I had borrowed glass hurricanes from a friend of my mother's who's daughter had recently married and used those in her wedding as part of her centerpieces. I told everyone to be careful with them while we were setting up because they didnt belong to me.

Fast foward to the day after the wedding. We go over to my mom's for gift opening and brunch and she pulls me aside and tells me that 4 of the hurricane/flower centerpieces were missing when they cleaned up the reception hall.

After I had asked around has anyone seen them and called the hall and inquired we could not find them anywhere. I had to go out and purchase her new ones to the tune of about $150 (they were really tall and beautifully cut, not cheap ones). I KNOW I asked all of my maids if they had seen anyone take them because they werent mine.

A couple of months later I went over to one of my bridesmaids house to hang out with her and there were the 4 missing hurricanes on her mantle with fake flowers stuck in them. I was pissed! She admitted that she took them but said that she thought that others were taking home the centerpieces too and that thats what people do with centerpieces is that they give them away to the bridesmaids. Huh? Especially after we asked everyone if they had seen them because they were missing? We dont really talk anymore.

You must have been so mad! So nice of you to put $60 worth of liquor into it purely for the enjoyment of the kitchen staff! Had you charged for the cake? - if you'd charged them for it you could perhaps figure that they'd paid for it, and if they didn't make good use of the cake then it's their loss! Honestly, some people! icon_confused.gif

Oh wow, I cant believe they would try and steal your cake! Lucky you made the two tiers different flavours or you may not have known to confront them about it.

What is it with some people thinking that a wedding is just all about eating drinking and taking as much 'free stuff' as they possibly can? It shows such lack of class.

I'm no professional decorator, but for a first wedding cake, first three tier, I was pretty happy with it (although In retrospect I should have had the bride & groom closer together).

Looks like you've been making cakes for a long time. Your cake is absolutely gorgeous, and the bride and groom are adorable.

Maybe they thought that if it was a gift to them, then it's theirs only to eat; at least that could have been their excuse about keeping it for themselves.

Regardless, you did a beautiful job.
