Your cakes are fabulous!

As far as your MIL...!??? It's really sad! I wonder what her childhood was like? May be she was deprived. I don't think she's old enough to have lived through the Great Depression. I had an aunt who did and hoarded every morsel of food she could lay her hands on. If you looked in her refrigerator, you would fine dozens and dozens of pieces of waded up pieces of aluminum foil that were old and nasty! When we went to visit her, my parents always made sure we ate every meal out! Yep...and she would take her tiny bits of leftovers home!!!

I cannot begin to tell you how absolutely FABULOUS this idea is. Oh yeah, I'd definitely have to do this. I can't stop laughing over it, and I would definitely do this after they kept the cake not once but twice. I LOVE IT!

I'd love to say Thank you for the compliment, but you wrote the wrong name, those cupcakes are Coral3's. But I am glad you pointed them out because I had to go look. They are adorable.

Coral 3, The cake is very pretty. You should be proud. I just am amazed that they took the cake home and did not give any to their guests. I, too, think this was very rude. It seems some brides don't even know what the term "GUESTS" is all about. Try not to be discouraged. I'm sure you'll get another chance to show off you abilities. I have volunteered to make a cake for one of my nephews first birthday but I will be sure to find out if they plan to SERVE the cake.

If you didn't read all the way through, the OP did have another chance. Here is her post on it....

"...Would you believe it happened AGAIN!?

This time it was a cake for my mother in law's birthday. (Yes, same family - this is the mother of the aforementioned bride) We had a family get-together for her birthday, I made a two tier birthday cake which...she took home with her uncut! Admittedly it's not as baffling as the cake not being consumed at a WEDDING...it WAS only a birthday after all, but still! I don't understand...what is it with people not sharing their cake!? "

It was a very beautiful cake, I'm sorry it didn't get eaten at the reception. That could have been future customers/business for you.

Why would they want to save it for themselves is beyond me. Denying guest cake is rude enough but to take it home then hack it up and put it in the freezer, why? If it were me they would have to ration out that frozen cake because they would never get another one from me.

I get several customers who tell me "I don't want to take a ton of leftover cake home" but I've never had one who thought they could consume an entire tiered cake on their own!!! icon_eek.gif

Sheesh. I won't ask if there were weight problems involved...haha.

OP...your cake was GORGEOUS. So clean and well done. Love it!

Strangely enough they are not overweight at all.

I like the idea of making a dummy cake next time around. thumbs_up.gif Or I could make a 3" mini cake, seeing as they obviously only ever need two servings. Or perhaps I'll make cupcakes and just give them two. icon_twisted.gif

Okay, strike 2...they're O-U-T!!!
Fool me once, shame on you.
Fool me twice, shame on ME!!!

So, I know that when things happen in my family, the phones start ringing and people talk about each other and "take sides", etc. Is anyone in THIS family calling you and telling you how crazy these people are? Has anyone taken your side and told you not to make any more cakes for these people?? Has anyone gotten close enough to these people to hear how they are "rationalizing" this behavior?

I just don't get it!! Please, whatever you do, do NOT ever make another cake for ANYONE in that family!

I just read through this entire thread...it's like seeing a traffic accident, you don't want to see but can't look away. Geesh!

Last year I made a cake as a surprise baby shower gift from the sister who lives across the country and couldn't attend in person. She told her brother and SIL she was providing a cake but that was all. I made the clothesline cake in my photos, along with cupcakes spelling out the baby's name and delivered it to their house (which I don't normally do).

They later posted on my face book page that they never served the cake...they let their 70 guests LOOK at the cake but didn't slice it or serve it. They decided to freeze it to "save for the christening". SERIOUSLY???

How rude! I am still not over that one. Oh, and their house? HUGE! He is a successful dentist, this was their first child. And they saved the cake they didn't even pay for. I'm still shaking my head!!

I feel for you, OP. No more cake for them!

cakecraft, that cake is so precious. I can't believe another person who had their cake frozen instead of being served. I have to wonder if they'll even serve it at the christening. I'm flabbergasted that this would ever happen. Twice to the OP, and now to you.

Coral3 - I know this is a long-established thread, but I just wanted to congratulate you on your beautiful cakes. You, my dear, have a big future in cake decorating! I love both of your cakes icon_smile.gif

You know I was trying to rationalise their behaviour, from an Aussie perspective. It still doesn't compute. Now, I have had several bridal clients say to me when I've been consulting them "Its just cake, no-one ever eats the cake after dinner and all the drinking - they just want to dance". To which I have come close to escorting them to the door and saying "well, why the hell even buy a cake???"

To me, wedding cakes hold a special significance...the act of cutting the cake as a new couple and sharing it with your guests is part of the very symbolism of the union between husband and wife. I say these things on my website. I can't for the life of me understand why some people are so weird about wedding cakes sometimes! (I will say mostly these are younger brides and grooms, whose whole idea of attending a wedding is getting blind drunk). The only other thing I can think of is you know how people say "Its so beautiful! Its too pretty to cut" ? Maybe that was the dealio. (As in they wanted it on display like a prize piece of decorative art, rather than you know, a CAKE). I hear that a lot when I bring cakes along to friend and family events. And I am always saying, "No - CUT THE CAKE...THAT'S WHAT ITS FOR!!" LOL

Anyhow, long story short - its not you, its the bizarro relatives.

Just so you are aware, those bizarro relatives did cut up the wedding cake from the OP, and stuffed their freezers full of it, then ate it at their leisure....

Yeah, I know they've been pigging out on it in private...what I was kind of getting at was they wanted the cake there like 'art' and removing it to cut and serve it would have removed their centrepiece (OK, grasping at straws here, folks)...you know, that whole 'can't have your cake and eat it too' philosophy?

But yeah...bottom line: Bizarro.

Another thought that popped into my head was if they saved the cake(s), then when an event came up, they can be the big hero by volunteering to bring the cake ... then they show up with this really awesome cake while everyone oooooh's and aaaaaahhhh's all over it ... and them.

As I began cutting the cake, the groom's mom came up and said, "She (the bride) said I could take a couple of these back to the hotel with me." I, like a logical person, thought she meant, "So when you're done, be sure to box up the leftover cakes for me to take with me."

Nope. She proceeded to take TWO of the cakes right then and there. I forgot to do the cutting ceremony at my own wedding and therefore no one got cake. My planner got drunk and was not prompting us to do things. Yeah, really! I mean, I may do this for a living, too - but I was the Bride for Pete's sake - I knew I'd be just as flighty as every other bride and got a planner. HA!

As everyone was leaving I looked over and saw this big beautiful cake (that I made) sitting there in all it's glory. And no one asked me about it - "Hey, Dawn, when are we getting cake?" We hurried and took pics and I sent it home with the minister for the church social the next day.
