Be prepared to pay more than what you pay when you buy online. The store charges you shipping plus a profit for the owner, as it should be. It's just that it surprised me to read that you are tired of paying shipping costs. We all do one way or another! And don't even try to go to NY Bake on 22nd. Street and Sixth Avenue. The sticker shock will give you a heart attack! For example: a 2-pound package of cake flour is $ 6.00. I buy cake flour at $ 0.13 cents a pound - so go figure!

EllieA's right. Your going to pay no matter which route you choose....

If I need something right away,Im paying for the convienience of picking it up that day which is costing me not only the store price, but gas, plus my time to go get it..and risking that they may have run out when I get there (been there, done that).. OR... If i buy it online, I am paying for the convienience of Not spending my time, or gas/milage to go get the item, but I am going to have to wait for the UPS guy to bring it to me... In my case I can get an order from globalsugarart.com overnite with the standard shipping....

where do u buy your cake flour for $0.13 cents? most all of the time I go local and yes here in Philadelphia, PA. its a marketplace that sells food and utensils for restaurants in which is open to the general public and they have a limited area for pastry some things are sold by the case and others individually and i found a 20 pound satin ice white/vanilla fondant and i could not beat their price 43.99 a bucket, in which in a other local location they had a 5 pound satin ice white/vanilla fondant for 27.99 a bucket it is crazy when you see this prices , but for me to get a bargain i have to make multiple stops !!!

Yes, that store charges you so much for everything! Sometimes double. I go there when I need things in a hurry and don't have time for the shipping time. I usually order from Global Sugar Art.

There's Bev's Cake and Candy in Whitehall, PA (by Allentown). Their boxes are actually cheaper than the craft stores, even if you use one of their 40% off coupons. They also have Satin Ice and Fondarfic in stock. It's not huge, but they have a good selection and the people who work there are helpful.

Jean0561, thanks for that info. I won't bother to go there, because it will be about an hour drive from where I'm staying. I have a couple of nice ones near me anyway.

I second Deb's Cake and Candy. She's also the one who sponsors the decorating contest at the Allentown Fair.

If you are ever in central PA area there is a cake supply store called Campbell's that has a nice supply of cake and candy items. They aren't that expensive either like some have commented about. It is in York, PA. Their boxes are cheaper than Michaels and they have cake boards in many sizes. I go there all the time since they are right down the street from me.

I go to Oasis Supply almost weekly. You can order EVERYTHING online and take advantage of the discounts they give for online orders. You will plug in your payment/credit card information BUT you can make up a 16 digit number because they DO NOT run it immediately. It will "appear" as though you are being charged for shipping.

In the comments at the end of your order, put that you are picking up your order and tell them the day you are picking up or not that you want a call when it is ready. If you give a fake number, you'll have to give them your card and pay when you pick up. If you gave them your real credit card number, you can either tell them to run it before you get there or you can browse the little showroom to see if you want to add anything on and then pay when your order is complete. YOU WILL NOT be charged for shipping if you are a pick-up even though your online order form says you will be.

Also... They work with Pfeil & Holing. If you can't find something you want on their website, you can visit www.cakedeco.com (Pfeil & Holing's site) and figure out what you want and in the comments section, add the name and item number. They'll order in from Pfeil and Holing for you.

You can also call Pfeil & Holing direct and ask them to ship you a catalog. Then you can just browse through, pick out what you need, write down the numbers, search oasis site by item numbers to fill your shopping cart, then add the additional items in the comment section.

You get discounts based on volume and HAVE to order through the website to get them. And you don't have to pay shipping. Works out great. Saves me a lot of money.

I use "K&B Cake and Candy Supply" in North Versailles, PA, and also "Make a Cake" in the North Hills, PA, on Rochester Rd.

If you can find a recipe for fondant, you'll save a ton of money by making it yourself. You'd be amazed at how easy it is, without tons of chemicals too.
I recommend "Making Fabulous Fondat DVD" by Carrie Biggers. I went to one of her classes last March. We made the fondant in class, and I bought the DVD, in order to refresh my memory if I ever needed to.
Good luck! icon_smile.gif
