Covering Cake Seperator Boards

I was noticing today the silver and gold board paper at hobby lobby is very expensive. I was wondering if there are other things I can use that will work. Any suggestions will be appreciated.
I buy 5/8" thick foam core board at Michaels when I have a coupon. Then I cut the size cake board that I need, cover it with foil, freezer paper, wrapping paper plus clear self-adhesive film or plain saran wrap if I'm going to cover the top with a layer of fondant. The foam core is the perfect thickness to wrap the edge with colored vinyl tape and then wrap with decorative ribbon. It's also very sturdy and light.
I cover a double thickness of foamcore boards in coordinating colored fondant. I cut them out with an X acto knife and glue them together, cover them in fondant and add a ribbon around the edge if desired.
