Hi all,

I would like to be able to make white buttercream, as I find the butter adds a muted colour to this icing and I do not get a pure colour when I mix it in. The recipe I have calls for vegetable shortening, but that is not available in Australia. Has anyone had the same issue and has found a substitute for this ingredient? I know I can get the icing whitener from Wilton, which I will turn to if I can not find anything suitable.

If you can't find the substitute for the vegetable shortening, I have read that you can add a drop or so of Violet food coloring to bring it back closer to white.

Most cake decorating suppliers, catering supplies and foodservice companies have vegetable shortenings: products such as Solite and Pilot are available from companies like Goodman Fielders and EOI Bakery ..

Crisco is also available .. our local Sugar Fix has the 3lb cans ..

Thanks for all your help. I have since been able to find a place that sells the shortening, but I will keep your suggestions in mind.
