Ok, I am pretty sure this was discussed a while back but I can't find it when I search. I remember reading a post about someone using dry Kool-Aid mix to color their fondant. Who knows, maybe I dreamed about it, lol! I would love to be able to give whomever it was credit for the idea. Anyway, my friend's son was having his 7th birthday party this weekend. She is a single mom, so I volunteered to do the cake. He wanted spiderman. I did the cake in buttercream, with fondant accents, and a red fondant Spiderman on top. I always hate having to add in so much red coloring to get the red bright enough because of the taste. Well, I thought about the Kool-Aid, and added in one packet of cherry. I put it in the mixer bowl with the melted marshmallows and then added in my powdered sugar. The kool-aid dissolved perfectly, no specks or anything. And I didn't have to put any color in at all. The marshmallow fondant came out awesome...and it tasted just like a cherry Starburst!! The kids loved it. I just wanted to give my review of this. It's definitely an A+!

I can't decide between trying the koolaid or the jello like someone else suggested. Did it get deep red? I am looking to do strawberry flavored, but more pink in color.

I tried it a couple of years ago with grape koolaid and it didn't work well. It was sour and had specks of blue and purple in gray fondant.

I'll have to try it sometime with cherry though icon_biggrin.gif

I just made Tesso's jello MMF this weekend with low sugar raspberry jello. It made a nice pink, I'm sure the other red colors will too. It also tasted wonderful. It's in the recipe bank.

I wondered about Kool-Aid. Glad to know it will work.

It was a true, bright red color. But I put a whole pack of kool-aid in for about a half-batch of mmf. I'd say for a larger batch, with just one packet of kool-aid, it would be lighter.

I'm thinking it didn't have any specks in it because I added it in to the melted marshmallows, so it got completely dissolved. Unlike if you tried to incorporate it into fondant that was already made.

I was so pleased, and can't wait to try it again!

I've added Jello to MMF to get a nice pink color then added some red coloring to make it more red - I have a Ferrari cake and a Denture cake in my album both where I used strawberry jello in the MMF. It tastes and smells super delicious. I have to try Kool Aid next time.

For the Ferrari cake, I used about 3/4 of an 1oz jar of the Wilton No Taste Red and it took about 3 days for the color to intensify. It tasted and smelled so yummy and the color was perfect.

For my Denture cake, I added about a 1/8 tsp of the Wilton No Taste Red to 1 batch of MMF with 1 large box of strawberry Jell-O.

I make MFF instead of MMF, but I just did the kool-aid trick with my MFF. I added 1 package of berry blue to the syrup (and I only make 1/2 batch MFF at a time). I still needed some additional color, but certainly not as much as without it, and it has a very kool-aidy flavor - but it's a kids cake so I thought it was great.

Do you add the Koolaid before you melt the marshmallows or after? Has anyone tried both? Is there a difference in the consistency?

With the Kool-aid I'm sure it would be the same as the Jello (which I used). Add it to the mallows after you have melted them, durring the stir but before the PS. the heat helps the crystals melt so it isn't grainy. This is also when I add the color. Made the MMF black and it didn't take much color at all to get jet black.

Make sure you let it rest, the rest helps get any lingering crystals dissolve.

I didn't notice any difference in the consistancy. However, I did wrap it when still slightly tacky. It was perfect with very very little extra PS needed the next day.

I'm so glad you liked it! I think it is great to get color and such good flavor out of using the kool-aid.

I just tried this with orange Kool Aid. The flavor is very fun! It did taste like a starburst. I didn't get a very vibrant color with the orange, but that wasn't a problem, I just added food color. My question is, has anyone else had a problem with the fondant being slightly tough and/or dry with the Kool Aid? I made my usual MMF and it is very hard to work with. Any ideas?

i made lemon lime and raspberry lemonade mmf with kool aid and it was really good! i find it is a little tough working with after letting it sit overnight so i had to warm it in the microwave for 10 secs.

s/o, has anyone tried using snow cone flavoring? i have a ton of bottles and everytime i look at them i wonder what it would be like using it instead of the water....

Oh yah, the cool-aid works great. I like using county time pink lemonade in my glaze and regular country time in my lemon poppyseed cakes.

I dont know about you guys but I like to add the cool aid to the the egg and water, mixture. Let it sit for a few minutes to dissolve then add the rest of the ingredients. It seems to distribue the flavor better. How do you guys do yours?

When I make MMF and add koolaid, I add 1-2 extra tablespoons of water to help with the dissolving. I add the cool aid to the water, let it sit for a few minutes, stir it, then add marshmallow, microwave, stir, reheat if needed, then into the kitchen aid..etc..etc..

The extra water seems to keep it from getting so hard. Let it sit over night, and then pop it into microwave the next morning. and it is ready to go.

herekitty-- I am so glad the Jello MMF worked great for you. icon_biggrin.gif
