Hi, I took all of the Wilton Classes at my Micheals Cart Store and I learn a lot. A lot of our friends here on CC also took these classes and they were very very helpful to me. Its a great investment

I agree. I good place to start. Just keep in mind the methods they teach are not the only way to decorate. There are tons of youtube tutorials. I went to a Wilton class and quit because I wasn't getting what I wanted from the class. I'll stick to CC and youtube.
I started out with the Wilton classes last year, and loved them! At the beginning of this summer, I applied to be a WMI just because I think the classes are so much fun, I wanted to keep doing them. I also figured it would force me to keep up my basic BC skills, since I really prefer working with fondant. My first class is next month. The classes are different from when I took them, so I'm pretty excited to get started.
Wilton is not the be all end all of cake decoration, but it really is a fantastic place to start!

great place to start and a great way to "force" yourself to practice. use the class time to its fullest and don't be afraid to ask your instruction lots of questions.
I've been decorating cakes for 30+ years but there are always new trends to keep up with. I took a Wilton class a few month ago to brush up on "Fondant and Gumpaste Flowers" and it was very informative. Some of the things I had already learned but you can never know too much. Some of the tips and suggestions were really great and I was able to ask the instructor many questions that were really helpful.

I took all the Wilton courses a couple of years ago and really enjoyed them. I had a great instructor who has been decorating cakes for many years and is the pastry chef for a local restaurant. She always had great tips and was very willing to share her expertise. She went so far as to give me her cell phone # to help me with my daughter's mini wedding cakes. The instructor can make all the difference in your class experience. Go for it, I'm sure you'll enjoy it.
I try to tell my students that this is a good way to start- but there are other techniques that I will not show them in class because they are not the Wilton method. It is up to them to do some research and some tweaking to find the best method for them. I send them here and to you tube on the last night of class.

I took all three classes ten years ago and I think it's worth it especially for what they charge. The instructor I had was a little snobby and kept calling me a perfectionist in front of everyone so I got the last laugh on her the last day of my third class. A baker in Maryland gave me her butter cream recipe so I made up a batch and took it to class instead of the Wilton butter cream recipe. I hated that frosting I didn't like the flavor of the imitation butter. The recipe that was given to me used real butter. One of the ladies asked her if she could achieve a white frosting using real butter and the instructor told her no. So I told the lady next to me that my frosting had real butter and she asked if she could taste it. Next thing I know is she was writing down the recipe. The instructor over heard us talking and then asked me if she could have the recipe. Hmm I wonder if she is using the recipe with butter. LOL.
I took the Wiltons class and learned a lot, when I took the class they were in the process of changing their student kits so I'm sure it's even better now. I do plan to take the other classes but because I had to drive 2 hours one way, I kinda need a break so I have been learning alot from the members on CC they are awesome they help with any questions I have, I sometimes use You-tube and ehelp.
