By your post I thought first it was a potential client looking for a cake decorator to hire for a one time gig, like most CL ads are for. I had to re-read your post again to decifer that you meant it was a bakery looking to hire a cake decorator...LOL! Guess it was a case of thinking faster than you can type leaving out that important tid bit of info.

They may want you to decorate a cake on site in front of them. That is the usual way they can know. Just looking at a portfolio will not tell them what they want/need to know. So be prepared to decorate when you go to the interview. Good Luck! icon_smile.gif

Your cakes are very pretty. Go in with all the confidence you can muster, and wishing you much luck and success. Anyone would be thrilled to have you on their team! icon_smile.gif

I agree. Both decorating jobs that I've had required me to decorate a cake on site.

In addition to being prepared to demonstrate some skills, why don't you bake a 6" cake as an example of your work. Present it to them perfectly torted, covered in smooth fondant or buttercream, beautifully decorated, with your best piped borders.

Best of luck!

As cakesdivine said, be prepared to decorate a cake when you get there. Borders, roses, any other special flowers you can do, etc - do a couple test runs tonight if you feel up to it. You want to be able to jump right to it and appear confident if they ask you to decorate. thumbs_up.gif

No nail polish. Wear your hair neatly pulled back or bring a hair tie with you to pull it back if/when you're invited into the food prep area.
If/when you're invited into the food prep area, if you don't immediately see a handwashing sink, ask where it is and scrub up. I can't remember where I read this, maybe here, but a kitchen was looking to hire someone and the otherwise well-qualified applicant was disqualified because they didn't wash their hands before handling food during the interview. Seems obvious, but don't let your nerves make you forget that step!

And good luck!!

I have been doing cakes also self taught but was wondering if I wanted to get a job, would I need a degree or would like the wilson school work for me. Not sure if I would need a culinary degree or just the training. Appreciate any help one could give. Thanks CaSandra

I'm an overly cautious person. Or maybe too cautious. Have someone
drive you there and drop you off and watch you go in if it's a home or
an apartment/condo. You just never know. Sorry for being a wet blanket,
but there are way too many crazies out there. If it's legit, then I wish
you all the luck and hope you get the position and will be happy!! icon_smile.gif
