I have a friend who wants me to do a cake for her baby shower... she wants the cake to be baby blocks... you know the kind I am talking about, right? Well, I am pretty sure I can do the cakes.. no problem, after looking at a few examples here, I know it will be a lot of work, but it is do-able...
but here is the thing..
She wants the cakes to be marble... how do I do this??? I know it is probably a simple thing, but I am new to cake decorating... IS it simple??
AND
She wants it done in WHIPPED icing.... is this even possible??? If so how? Does this type of icing lend well to decorations? Can anyone reccomend a GREAT recipe for whipped icing?? Can it be colored???
HEELLLLLLPPPPPPP!!!
I am worried here.. I really WANT to do this cake... but not if I cannot do it well!
Any suggestions???
Andi
Does she mean whipping cream? There are recipes out there that will make it more stable, but it is going to be a bit tricky to use. I would do a practice cake first.
Wilton makes a mix, but beware, it's terrible.
Marble cake is easy. You make yellow cake, reserve some batter, turn it chococolate, and put dabs of it a top the yellow, and swirl.
whipped icing should be fine as long as you don't want to stack them. It works fine to decorate with, it takes color well also. If you do stack the cake make sure there is a layer of cookie crumbs or coconut between the layers. So it won't stick. Even then it can still be fussy and stick. So just be warned! Don't be nervous, i'm sure you'll do great!
I am going to do a trial run.. just to be sure I can do it... anyone have any REALLY good whipped frosting recipes??
Andi,
I've used Pillsbury cake mix for the last 14 years with lots of luck. They have a marble cake mix that is excellent. The instructions are on the box on how to make it marble. I don't use whipping cream icing, it sort of intimidates me and I don't feel safe using it. The recipe for icing that I use is 2 lbs. of powdered sugar, 1 1/3 cup of Crisco shortening, 1/2 cup of water. In the water add your flavorings. I use teasp. vanilla and about 3 drops of almond flavoring. However, you can use any flavorings that you like. I then beat until creamy. It has always worked for me. There are some great recipes on www.sugarcraft.com for different icings. Good luck.

Vicky!!! Thanks so much! I am going to the store tomorrow and am picking up a couple boxes of the pillbury cake mix.. I wish i could just do the icing I normally do.. I am pretty good with it now.. but she ants WHIPPED icing.. LOL! Picky stinker! But I shall prevail.... I am off to sugarcraft to see if I can find a good recipe for the icing... cross your fingers for me! LOL!
Thanks for the cake mix tip!!!
Andi,
I'm sure you'll do fine. Let us know how you do. I might be brave enough to try whipped topping when it is not sooo hot here. Be sure to bake your cake at 325 degrees, it works better.
Vicky
Thanks for the vote of confidence Vicky!!! I am getting excited.. I am almost certain I can do this cake for her! YEAH!!! LOL!!!
