Started in January and am self-taught, so far. Probably going to try and take some classes soon though!
I'm self taught! Although I am taking my first Wilton Cake Decorating Class in a couple of weeks. I am trying to get my friend to my level that way when people ask me if they can hire me for a cake I can just refer them to her. (I would really rather die than HAVE to bake for a living)
Self taught and have a licensed business. I mainly focus on wedding cakes but...if I'm available, I will do other events. Very proud of the fact that I taught myself. But, definitely not opposed to taking classes someday.
I'm self taught and am having so much fun learning and challenging myself! I've only been at it about a year. Someday I hope I can be good enough to have my own business!
I'm completely self-taught, and been st it just over a yr. I've always been artistic, so this is my new outlet.
Well I'm not self taught, I'm CC taught! I'm stil uber new though, only done 3 cakes.
I started doing cakes last year for people I work with. I am self-taught and surprise myself with how far I have come. I learned how to work with the materials online or by watching cake shows on tv. I entered my first cake competition a few months ago and was shocked that I won first for professional division, 1st for novelty category, people's choice, and decorator's choice. I am a surgical assistant full time, but now have considered a career change.
I am self taught, never had a class but wish there were some close by and conveniently available. When my daughter was born almost 18 years ago, I wanted her cakes to be special so I bought a Wilton yearbook and read and re-read it. Her first cake was just a multi-tiered rectangle with frosting bodied-clown pic heads. Each clown was holding a cookie that spelled out Happy Birthday Kasey. Each year I have gotten a little better and have done many family weddings and events but I still consider myself a hobbyist. It has become an outlet for the artistic side of me.
Very much self-taught and very very much a newbie to all of this... I have a longggg longggg way to go to be as good as some of you here... but I so love doing this and love to learn new techniques. I was never very artistic (still no good at drawing) but I do love to create cakes! CC and youtube are greatttttt for helping me learn!

I am amazed by some of the responses... I would have never guessed they were self taught. There is hope for me after all
I am self taught. I started doing "different" and "personalized" cakes way back, when I was about 12yrs. old.
CC, youtube and Google have joined my team!
I am totally self taught, never took a class in my life. Got a lot of help from here, youtube and google.

since ... I was born probably But I have actually made my first fondant cake on June 29 (my name day) this year.
I am self taught too. I have been doing this about 5 years now and I am still learning new things everyday
I am self taught and still learning. There is so much good advice and tips everywhere.
I guess I might as well add that Im self taught...coming up on my one year anniversary!
Fun question! Thanks for asking. I'm self taught too! My mom taught me to cook, bake, sew and crochet and my dad was in construction. Making things out of other things is pretty much what I've always done. I think I'm also the only one in my family who can read IKEA instructions! Over the past few years, and with more intensity over the past year, I've mostly concentrated on cake. I've really learned a lot between seeing the cooking and baking shows on TV, Youtube videos and of course the helpful hints and amazing work of others here. And really, what other hobby lets you EAT what you make? Safely, that is! I'm always thinking of what to make next but don't have a business. Web site coming soon tho! Enjoy everybody!
Aside from some Wilton classes and CakeCental...self taught! I have a successful side business.
I've learned everything from reading books and magazines, and asking questions. And I go to bakeries to watch the action.
My mother and grandmother taught me the baking aspect. My daughter taught herself about fondant and she taught me. All you wonderful people on CC taught me the rest.
I too am self taught and Mum taught. I have only more recently got into the 'World of cake decorating' and have much to learn. Really enjoy creating new pieces of art work each time as no two cakes have been the same so far. I love picking up tips and watching videos to learn new techniques.
I also have been teaching myself to decorate cakes and loving every minute of it there are classes around but to tell you the truth I never even thought about taking them I just look at all the pics and the sites out there, especially this site it's been a god sent, and I don't really intent to stop any time soon, I'm sure it will take alot but the family loves it and they get to eat all the test runs lol
I'm self taught! I've been doing cakes for about two years now, and I'm taking my FIRST sugar class in October! yay for me!! Can't wait!
I guess you could say Im self taught, everything I learned (other than the baking a covering in fondant) I learned in art classes in highschool and college...its amazing how the painting and clay techniques have translated to cake! I have been bakeing forever and loved it, and this is the best way to combine my art and food loves! Im working on opening a bakery, just hoping I have a rich relative somewhere who wants to give me some money lol!
