I just made a simple double layer 8" round cake covered in BC. The top layer had a small crack at the edge of the cake before i covered it, but nothing that i couldnt fill and cover. As I kept decorating I kept noticing waves and dips appearing in the icing. Tried filling a dip with icing....just kept working. Now the crack is spanning the whole cake and now going down the side. Customer is supposed to pick up the cake tomorrow. The cake is actually pretty cute and it is for a good friend of mine so I told her absolutely no money! My fear is that in the night, part of the cake is going to fall off or the crack is gonna look like the grand canyon! I have to work tomorrow, so no time to rebake and start over! any suggestions! About to upload pics of the cake! how can i salvage this cake!
Here are the pics of the cake....and the crack is even worse now than you see in the pics! HELP URGENT!

The cake is adorable. I actually just saved it into my favorites.

I really don't know what to say to help you. Did you let it cool and settle before filling and icing? The only time I have ever had a cake crack like that, I didn't allow it to cool completely, so it started cracking when I applied the pressure of icing.

aww thank you . I actually got part of the idea from another cc user. I added the zebra print myself. And actually the cake was frozen. It sat to thaw since 7 am this morning. so it was completely thawed. The only thing i can think is that i should have leveled better and maybe i put the more rounded side down, which would cause it to bow....i think i may have done this! I cant remember!oh i am so upset! Plus i have another cake i was supposed to do tonight. Planning on doing that one tomorrow, but i need to make fondant for that cake tonight! looks like another long night for me! I am considering removing all of the decor, removing the top layer and then trying to do it with one layer, but i think the butter cream will look all patched up. maybe i should cover the cake with fondant and redo accents. But i have to make the fondant now. will it be too soft?

The cake is just too adorable to leave it like that...why don't you try to cover it with fondant like you said. I always make my fondant and use it right away...it won't be too soft. And maybe it will hold all of that together! Way cute idea!

I think it's probably a leveling issue. Not sure what you can do about it now, but if it's a gift for a friend, she'll LOVE it!

If you're planning on making MMF, it really needs to sit and cool complelty to firm up. I don't have a majic answer. The only thing that comes to mind is putting it back into the fridge to get it as firm as possible to stop the sinking. So sorry this happened!

Do you have enough fondant to do another cake in buttercream with only fondant accents?

I looks like the whole cake is falling apart. I don't think even stick a piping tip in there to add icing as a glue can save it. If the decor comes off in one piece, are you sure you can't rebake while decorating the other cake and then ice and put the decor on the new cake in the morning?

How awful to have that happen after you worked so hard! I'm sorry this happened to you.

Oh Thanks guys! ha! I am very pleased at the moment! I just uploaded progression pics to the Disaster link. I cut off the top layer completely, (luckily I had another cake I was supposed to do tonight and I had another 8" layer I could use without rebaking!), iced the whole thing with white BC. It caused the mixed look in the icing, but i thought it was pretty cool. Then luckily I had enough black to make new stripes and I salvaged all the flowers and the A. Oh and I had pink fondant I had made for the flowers, so there was enough to cover half the cake. I think it turned out pretty good considering! I HAVE to go to bed now, It is 1:00am and I have to work in the morning! Got to get up in 5 hours! thanks all for your advice!
