I would like to make a Texas flag out of fondant and then drape it on a cake. Should I piece together pieces of red, white and blue fondant, then drape it? Should I paint the colors onto the white fondant and then drape it" Should I drape the fondant then try to paint it?

i did one on a cake board with a gun and ammo box (in my picks). i would recommend cutting the pieces and attaching them to the backgound, then placing over the cake. i would not paint it. i would be afraid of smudge marks, streaking, and condensation that might form on the food coloring and make a mess. by piecing it, you don't have to worry about damp fingers leaving finger prints and you will be able to handle it a little more freely icon_smile.gif

I've only done this with small flags and what I did was cut out the rectangle, handpaint it (let dry a little bit) and set it onto skewers to let it dry so it looked like it was flying. Once dry I was able to remove it off the skewers and place it on the cake. Easy Peasy.

Thanks for the advice!
The flag I will make needs to be big enough to drape over a 4" dome shaped cake.

I just made a cake with the Peruvian flag draped over the side of the cake (it's in my pics). I rolled a big piece of white, then used a little water before laying down the red pieces. I then carefully rolled outward from the red (carefully to not ruin the straight inner edges) to thin in out and make sure it was attached. I had to do this quickly and use plastic wrap to cover the white piece while i rolled the red so the parts wouldn't dry out. I used tooth picks as support while the flag dried on the cake.

Good luck! HTH!
