this might be a dumb question, but why did the sweet and saucy decorators cut out a clay base for the real buttons before putting them into the mold mixture?
was that simply to make the buttons have more depth or was there another reason?

Yes, I would like to know this as well. I was trying to figure out how they were doing that.

You are absolutely right. when you make a silcone mold, you have to make sure that there is enough depth in the product you are molding or it won't get the definition and detail you are looking for and it will be really hard to make a satisfactory mold. Hope that helps!

hey, i actually guessed right icon_biggrin.gif ...that probably won't happen again for a long time, lol.

i wonder if that "release" stuff they put on the buttons comes with the food safe mold kit. i will have to research that; i'd love to make some of my own molds.

thank you!

This is something I wanted to try as well because it seems to me that it's a much cheaper option that buy some of those things from the stores. The prices are outrageous!

The release product doesn't come with the actual silicone putty. I had to purchase it separately. It's not expensive. I actually purchased my silicone mold kit from Michael's. If you use the 40 percent off coupon you get the kit for 12.99. It's called Amazing Mold Putty.

I totally missed one second of the show, the part where she described putting the molded piece UNDER the fondant.

Does anyone know what she did?

I think she must have used a mold and created the decorative piece out of chocolate, then stuck it on the cake, then out fondant over it.

how did she stop it from sliding down the cake when the fondant went over it?

Hi Everybody,

Somehow I missed this post and am only discovering it now. I saw the segment on fabulous cakes and the mold making material that they used was CopyFlex Liquid Silicone. The release agent is a material I invented called, "Release-Dit." Both of the products are food grade and safe to use when making molds for food.

They thickened the buttons for exactly the reason you guessed. drakegore! Sometimes buttons can have an outer edge that is too thin. Safe-D-Clay was used to thicken the back of the buttons. You just roll it out to the thickness you desire, place the buttons on top of the safe-d-clay, press down to get full contact between the clay and the buttons and then cut around the outside of the buttons and through the clay. The cavities in the resulting mold will be thicker than the actual buttons. Remember that you do not have the fill a mold completely when using it. If a mold is too deep and you want a thinner molding to come out of it, only partially fill the mold to the thickness you desire.
