I've read alot of different things. Use a powder color, use an oil based color...how do YOU add color to your modeling chocolate?

Just like you add color to to fondant. It doesn't have to be oil based or powder, gels will work just fine.

when it's in melted form, you should only use candy colors to prevent clumps/seizing.
but once it has set up and aged, you can knead in your regular gel colors.

if you are wanting a dark color, start with semi-sweet MC or dark colored candy metls because you will have to add to much gel to get to your target and it will change the consistency.
