I have never used gumpaste but was wondering how you color it?? I am wanting to make a hat cake and make the bill out of gumpaste or gumpaste/fondant but was wondering how you get it to be the exact color as the rest of the hat that is black?? Can I just mix half gumpaste and half fondant? And if so will it change the black color of the fondant? Thanks in advance icon_smile.gif

I just took the Wilton's Fondant/Gumpaste class and we did both. You can either mix half gumpaste and half colored fondant or you can use your color pastes to add to the gumpaste...the half and half is less messy

You color gumpaste the same way you color fondant. I use the gels but you can use paste color too. You can also dust with petal dust color. You can mix gumpaste and fondant together (it's called modeling paste), you could also just add tylose or CMC to your fondant instead of gumpaste, to get the same result, and then your color would match.

Thank you. When you mix half and half does it change the color. I am going to be making a black baseball cap and don't want the bill to be a different color than the top of the cap. Thanks

Gumpaste handles just like fondant. The main difference is that it dries a lot harder than fondant. So, yes, if you knead white gumpaste into your black fondant, it will change the color. You can color your gumpaste with black gel or paste, just like you color your fondant.

The best way to make sure the colors match on both parts of your hat is to follow sweetflowers' advice and add tylose powder to your fondant and forego the gumpaste. When you knead in the tylose, it does not change the color of the fondant. I do this often. Especially when I want a bow (fondant+tylose) to match the ribbon on the cake (fondant).

If acquiring tylose powder isn't an option, then painting or airbrushing your finished hat will ensure the color is consistent - even if the hat and bill don't match exactly before painting. If you choose to paint, mix your black coloring with some clear alcohol, such as vodka, gin or Everclear. This will help it dry faster.

Thank you. That is exactly what I thought the answer would be. I may try the tylose just have to check and see if my local cake store carries it icon_smile.gif Thanks
