I recently heard that some cake bakers use soda in their cakes to substitute other ingredients. Does anyone know how this works and what can be substituted? icon_biggrin.gif

Yes you can sub sugar free pop for the liquid as it gives great flavours. So far I have used Cream Soda, Root Beer, and Organge.

I have made a Coke cake - the recipe is on the Coke website. It's a very dense cake but tasty. The primary liquid ingredient is Coke.

That's a trick to lower calories and fat in a cake as well--I think I first heard of that at Weight Watchers.

Just to be sure...it replaces only the water and oil? Not the eggs?

I use Sprite in my lemon cake. Not to save calories though.

This is highly touted by my Weight Watchers leader- mix plus 12oz diet soda. I've never tried it, but those who have love it.

It all depends on the combination of cake mix and soda flavor you use. I've made one using a white cake and an orange soda.. yum!

And yep.. it's just a can of soda and a cake mix--NOTHING else.

ahhmazing! I'll try it with a white cake mix!
Figures I have every mix but white! They had a sale. icon_razz.gif

I think I might have to do this tomorrow!
Do I bake it for the same time as I normally would?

It's been a long time since I made one, but you probably bake it as usual. I'd think I'd check it about 10 min sooner just to be on the safe side.. since no oil or eggs.

This would be good for vegans as well - make an non-dairy icing!
I keep reading about strawberry pop - I don't think Canada sells this.
So creme soda will have to do - and some strawberries with vanilla icing..

MMm

I wonder if there is still any Pic-a-Pop places left they used to have strawberry I think. I know Co-op brand drinks sell Black Cherry, think I'll have to try this!
