I can't quite decide what size tiers these are. What do you think?

The top three look like more of an inch difference while the bottom two seem to be maybe two inches different?

That's what I was thinking. The bride has requested only 4 tiers and I usually go for the 2 inch difference, but didn't want to disappoint her.

Well I think you'd want to go more off the servings needed than the actual servings used. I'm thinking the average person wouldn't notice too much the difference. I had to look hard to even notice the top being closer together.

Find out how many servings she needs the figure out what size tiers you need.

She's wanting around 100 servings, so I'm going either 4,6,10,14 or 12, 10, 8, 6. I like the 1st option, but just hope it doesn't alter the look of the cake too much so that she's disappointed. Maybe I'm just being paranoid though!

polkadot, do these sketches help? the bottom one shows the two options you mentioned, assuming cakes are 4" tall and covered overall with 1/2" frosting/fondant...

another option that just barely gives 100 servings is 4-6-9-12

and because I was curious about the original picture, I tried a 4-6-8-12-16 which seems to have the same contours as the photo cake

You are the bomb! I'm still not over being super impressed with your paper fold up cake servings, and now you whip this out? Are you a whiz-bang graphic artist as well as a cake artist? I can see why Doug wants you to do templates. (I still don't have any idea how to use Doug's templates or what they are, but they look really cool.)

May I ask you to provide a link in here for PolkaDot79 (and me) for the cake serving paper slices in case she missed that forum. I can't find my link to your instructions. Thank you so much.

Looks like a 12, 10 ,8, 6 &4 .The drape on the top layer gives the illusion of making the cake look nearly the same size as the one below it because it comes out quite wide at one side but I think it is 2 " smaller.

Can you do these in some of the other shapes well. Like square and Hex.
Cool drawings.

Thanks Apti. No, I've just had some training and lots of practice in Microsoft Word (used create the paper cake slices) and Google Sketchup (used to create these cake sketches)...

I didn't know either til I looked at them -- many of them show how you can make unique/intricately shaped cakes by baking a "normal" shape (square, round, etc), cutting it up, and rearranging the pieces. Example: star shape made from square cake.

Yes, but... I did the mock-ups in this case because I knew the specific sizes Polkadot was considering. I can't (well, actually won't) just start randomly posting drawings of random shapes that someone MIGHT use... icon_smile.gif

You are beyond AWESOME!! Thanks so much...think I might go with the 2 inch since it indeed does look more like the pic she sent.

I used to play around in Word with my cake sketches since I've taught Office the past 4 years at HS/Tech level, but nothing like this. I'll have to check out this Google app!
