Get A Fondant Covered Cake Silver?

I am making a car cake and don't have an airbrush. What should I use to get the cake the color of a silver mustang? I am wondering if those wilton color mists would work on fondant for this effect. Thanks in advance for any advice!
You can brush on silver highlighter dust cut with vodka, or preferably, use a Preval sprayer available at Home Depot. They are small, canned compressed-air driven 'airbrushes' that do the job beautifully. They're available in the paint section at Home Depot.
hey cakepro, they say to use a couple of drops of vodka with the dust. if ur only using a couple of drops how much of the dust do u put in at a time to when appling with a brush tia
I have used the Wilton silver luster dust before to paint onto a fondant covered cake (with a small brush). I find that it needs to be a pretty thick consistency to work well. I use dumped about half of the little cylinder of the luster dust into a very small dish, and added a few drops of liquid at a time. I've used vanilla extract and vodka, and they both work well. Just be sure to add the liquid in small amounts. HTH and good luck with the cake
another way is to use gray fondant and then dry dust it with nu silver luster dust. looks very metallic, but not the painted look you get with an airbrush.
Neither Silver Highlighter/Hi Lighter Dust nor the Preval Sprayer are food safe products. Unless the silver fondant will be peeled off BEFORE serving, it's a better idea to use food safe, FDA approved products where available. The short version is that silver and gold highlighter dusts are sold "for decoration, only" and the Preval sprayer doesn't use food safe propellants (that mix with the dust when sprayed and then wind up on the cake itself).
You can purchase FDA approved dusts that are completely edible at sugarpaste.com The Bright Silver creates a lovely finish when mixed with clear drinking alcohol (gin, vodka, Everclear) or lemon extract.

Well, Wilton doesn't make a silver mist spray, so that hardly matters.
I have used the PME and ChefMaster Silver sprays and I love them. It's great to have on hand, but it IS pricey and to get a really solid silver on something, it's a pretty expensive proposition.
I've ordered them form f o n d a n t s o u r c e . com (eliminate spaces). Use cakecentral as a coupon code & get 10% off.

I just bought a can of "Duff's Cake graffiti" in silver at Micheal's. I haven't used it yet, but need silver for an upcoming cake, so I thought I'd give it a try.
Please let us know how you like the Duff's silver spray. It would be nice to have something like that readily available, instead of having to mail order.

You can also use the regular edible silver air brush colors, just put them into a small pump bottle and spray it that way. Bronwen Weber says she does this too when she doesn't want to use the regular airbrush.
I would also love to hear how the Duff spray colors work too!

I love the idea of using airbrush color with a pump bottle. I have to gie it atry.
I also like to know how does duff spray works.
For a car, Nu Silver luster dust on a darker (grey) fondant (as suggested) will give you the right look. Cars are not highly metallic silver colors..
If you were trying to achieve a chrome look however, I don't think it would be as realistic. For tiny chrome bits you could use the highlighter dust. (But it is not food safe as mentioned!)
If you like metallic colors tho, I would suggest investing in a cost-effective airbrush (check ebay). I got a package for around $150. It included a compact compressor with an internal tank (for constant pressure), the airbrush with large (covered) cup, and 12 Americolor 4oz airbrush colors, but none of the Sheen/Metallic colors. And never again will I attempt to paint a whole cake with dust!
When I'm lazy and making cakes for friends, I don't even color my buttercream.. just airbrush the whole cake in a minute.
I LOVE my airbrush!!
Just used the Duff's silver spray.. it was awful. It sprayed very light 1/4 of the way through it clogged. Went to get another can, hoping to put on several coats..it was a mess.. After it dried I ended up painting silver luster dust from global sugar art, and it took three coats to get a good silvery finish. Make sure each coat dries before adding a second coat...
I just tried a sample piece out using light gray MMF and Duff silver can spray and it seemed to work perfectly. I loved the way the sample piece came out, hope it works the same on my project. Thanks!
thanks iwantalicakes, im going to micheals tom. think i,ll get the same results on wilton fondant ? i`ll have to tint it gray first?
Duff silver spray-I imagine it would work the same on Wilton fondant. MMF is super easy to make though, especially if you have a kitchen aid mixer I think tinting the fondant gray helps the silver color stand out and gives it that automobile silver look. Also my husband works on cars and says my sample piece looks exactly like the color a silver car would be. I will update with pics when I finish the cake on Friday.
thanks iwantalicakes, i have made the MMF befor and i agree its easy and good, but i will give that color a try thanks again
I did the eagle in my photos by coloring my fondant gray and using Duffs silver spray and it worked well for me. It used about 1 1/2 cans.
I made my car cake this weekend it's in my photos. I used 1 can, could have used more like cake_bliss but I only had 1 can and just now saw this reply! Anyway it woked very well and I am now a fan of his sprays.
Thanks for all the replies!
I just used Duff's silver graffiti spray and it did the same thing! Luckily I was only doing a bow, so I have enough, but it clogged up on me twice and I couldn't get it to work again after the second time.
AWFUL...I will NEVER buy it again.
there are other brands of SILVER spray on the market that work well they are a bit pricey a can runs $11 or $12 but it is easier than the dust w/vodka , the dust can be pricey too as you will need quite a bit of it.
in Sprays one brand is EDIBLE Color Sprays by Chefmaster and the other is PME Edible Lustre Spray GOOD LUCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
