I was hired to make a wedding cake for my boss' daughter, the cost of materials is looking to be about $152, but I'd like to make a little something on top of covering my costs. How should I go about costing? It will be for 110 people, three cakes, not tired, hydrengas in gumpaste and the whole cake covered in fondants. 16, 12, and 8.... I would love some advice! Its the first time I will have to ask for more then just covering costs....

Wedding cakes are usually priced by the slice. Call around and see what the going rate is in your area and go from there. Gum paste flowers are always priced as "extras" as they are time consuming.

First, a 8/12/16 cakes serves 24/56/100 = 180 servings. So you should charge for 180 servings, not 110.

My fondant rate was $4.50/serving x 180 = $810

Take it for what it's worth.

I follow indydebi's way of thinking. Only, my prices are lower. I'm still new, and the area that I'm in would leave me with fewer cakes to make if I charged more. Just know that you'll be spending a lot of time on it, and you need to be fairly compensated for it. Best of luck!
