What is it? I am trying to make a fairy cake, that has shimmering wings. However, I am not sure what I need to use to make is shimmer. I have seen lots of cakes on this site that have that "look". I am hoping someone out there will give me an idea.

Thanks! icon_biggrin.gif

Hi! I, too, am curious to know how people use this. I have seen Wilton shimmer dust at the cake store. Is this mixed with something and then painted on?

luster dust can be brushed on dry for a little color or mixed with clear alcohol and painted on.I use clear vanilla with the luster dust.
Hope this helps

When you mix the vanilla and luster dust, do you paint it on? And how much do you use?

Hi,
I use luster dusts with clear vanilla too. I just pour a tiny bit, say 1/4 teaspoon into a little cup and sprinkle in the lust dust to make a watery paste mixture. Then I use a paint brush to paint it right on. Hope that helps.

I used lemon extract with luster dust and it worked well too. It has a high alcohol content, which is what you want. That's why vanilla works, too. I think some people use vodka as well. The alcohol evaporates and leaves the luster instead and the surface you're painting doesn't get soggy.

I had so many luster dust questions too...and finally I dove in and purchased some in Rose Pink, Silver and some Pearl Dust...I gotta say the pearl dust is what I use the most. It depends on what color you are painting it onto. I had a white gumpaste flower and painted it with the pearl dust and yes it comes out looking as shiny and smooth as a pearl only it has a definite shimmer.

I mix it with lemon extract (you can buy this at any grocery store far as I know) it was suggested by someone here on the forums because it is the only thing that Colette Peters uses. It works well, but evaporates quickly as will anything with 84% alcohol...

Take one of those little white plastic paint palettes they have for acrylic paints and just tap some of the dust into it and I use a dropper to put in the extract...then mix with a paintbrush until you have your desired consistancy. Use quick and only use the amount you need. I also used it dry (the pearl dust) and it gives a very subtle shimmer to MMF. I can't wait to buy more of this stuff and play with it!

Hope that helps!

What about cake sprinkles. They come in different colors but I would use the plain one. To get more sparkle and lest sprinkles, you need to open the container and crush the sprinkles with a clean spatula right in the container. It a good idea to keep the paper cap in one piece and then after you crush the sprinkles and replace paper cap and top, just punch out the paper of a few holes. Really makes a difference than just using the sprinkes as is.

I use the edible glitter and it is really sparkly. I love the look of luster dust but haven't found it anywhere except online and the shipping from the US is always so much . The edible glitter comes in many colors but so far I have only tried the white and I love the look of it on my cakes . icon_smile.gif

In Britain we use a dust called Bridal Satin. We brush it on dry and it gives a fantastic pearly sheen to cakes. It is made by Orchard Products. I don't know if it's available over there but the store I use does ship abroad although I don't know what prices will be like. Follow this link to find their web page

There is an online store in Ontario called goldas kitchen. The shipping isn't bad and they carry tons of things including luster dust. There's a big labor day sale starting tonight at 8 and all day tuesday(just got an email). I have been ordering from them for years and have never had any problems.

@ Miss Baritone

Nice to see some products recommented that I know icon_biggrin.gif
I love the Bridal Satin too, but I don´t know if the dust is permitted in the US. Some of the ingrdients in the UK colors are not allowed overthere (but I don´t know exactly witch one).

As I buy most of my incredient, colours, tools etc. in the UK I must say, be carefull with the postage!!! The British Mail is really quick but also really expensive. So in the meantime I prefer to buy from the US although I have to pay custome fees.
