My friends are having an Italian themed party and I thought it would be fun to make a wine bottle cake. Any ideas on how to do it out of cake? I don't want to make a sheet cake or make the bottle out of rice krispy treats. It's a small gathering so I want a small cake. Thanks for any ideas you all may have.

I made a cowboy boot, which would probably be similar to a wine bottle, skinny and tall...
You could take take a 8" square and cut into fourths, after torting and filling it. Stack those up (making sure to use cardboard at 4", and dowel supports). Take another square, cut a fourth off, and cut that into fourths, and stack them up on top of the larger squares to be the neck of the bottle. Put into freezer long enough to make carving easier, and then round the edges and top until it is the shape you want. Cover with buttercream, and cover with dark green fondant. Then you can do your label in white fondant, paint on it, etc. You could color your buttercream and ice it with that, too. You could use leftover cake to do a block of cheese or canoli, or something....

I traced a real wine bottle, and used that tracing as my template to carve around a sheet cake. you can torte or not. Then use a wine bottle as your guide to decorating it.

In this case, I used the birthday girl's favorite brand of wine, and named it after her.

The gold label was from the bottle, it had the warnings on it about drinking and driving.

This was my 1st wine bottle, so it leaves some to be desired, but at least you can get the drift.
