Help! I need a bit of black fondant, but never enough to justify buying a huge tub! And I hate buying the wilton pre-coloured fondant because I never use the remaining three colours. If I were to use the colour mist spray from wilton, would that dye my fondant black enough?? If not, any other suggestions?
Thanks
Can you us mmf and make a small batch? When I need black I make chocolate mmf and then add black food coloring. It is faster and easier then doing plain white mmf and then trying to add black. I use darker chocolate to make it as close to black before adding food color.
I just made black for the first time from chocolate fondant last week and it turned out great. I second that suggestion. I have used the wilton spray before and thought it was crap.
I just tried this a few days ago and no, it will not work. The spray just pools, even if you do it in layers, and the color was grey, not black.
I've always had trouble getting black too, but I decided to try again and this time it actually worked. First, I only used a small amount of white mmf(like a golf ball) and added color until it was dark grey. After letting it sit over night, I added more black until it was all black, then let it sit over night again. The only problem I had with it at first is that it got really sticky and the consistancy wasn't great, so I ended up using small peices at a time and adding crisco to it until it was right. HTH
thanks mtownsend, I'll give it a try. I'm new to all of this and basically learning as I go. Do you have a good recipe for mmf that you wouldn't mind sharing?
If you buy a 2 pound tub of black Satin Ice you can use what you need and it keeps for a really long time in its container. It's not really a ton of fondant at all.
I never color black (or red) fondant... it's such a pain to do.
I am new too. I used the chocolate mmf recipe I found on this site. The only thing I would say is that it was pretty soft. It worked fine for covering the cake but it wouldn't do well if you are trying to do figures or anything that needs to harden. It is fairly basic recipe and was easy to make. Good luck!
When I just needed a small amount of black fondant, I would take whatever scraps I had of other colors and mush them together. Then use the black gel color to get it to black. It didn't take tons of color like when you try to go from white to black.
Americolor superblack is awesome at getting a pitch black fondant. I can never get more than a pale gray colour with Wilton's black gel colour unless I add crisco, cocoa, AND chocolate chips to my fondant
I had some leftover grey fondant that I added black gel color to and then airbrushed with Americolor. Worked great.
I recently bought Duff's black (and red) fondant. It was a little soft, but was fine for the details I used it for. Also, I used my 50% off coupon.
