I would like to do a cake similar to this one and want to know if the mountains are painted or if they are done in fondant. They appear to be flat, so I don't think it is fondant but it appears so flawless that I wanted to know what they used if it was painted. I know that Ace of Cakes did this cake. Thanks for any help!!!!!
My guess would be 4 layers of very thin fondant, that have been rolled by the pin together again... Then the trees painted...
Is it possible the mountains were airbrushed?
I've done a similar effect using torn paper towels and the canned spray colors from Wilton. I imagine that with an airbrush you could layer the shades of blue to achieve the three different shades and heights.
The trees look like they may be fondant to me.
Whatever the case, that's some amazing work!
It looks like icing sheets for the background, you can get those at michaels they melt into the cake to give that effect, they carry them for the cricut, but it looks like these wer done by using a stencil to cut them out, you can copy the design on wax paper and then use that to cut the icing sheets. Good thing is that you can apply them to fondant or buttercream, and you will get that very precise design in the cake. The other images are done in fondant like the trees placed over the top of the icing sheet. You could air brush the background image as well if you have one by using a manilla folder to cut out the design and hold that up against the cake. I would go with icing sheets though wayyyyyy easier. I have never been able to hand paint an image and get that uniform color as the picture has, so I doubt it is hand painted.
Since you say this is an Ace of Cakes cake, I'd guess it is hand painted. Those girls are always painting on there.
I think you could def. do icing sheets or fondant and get a very nice similar effect. Good luck- It's a pretty cake, I know you will do well!
