Ive taken it off and reiced it . Can I put royal icing, black, on white buttercream without bleeding? ........just asked about royal on BC and everyone said the BC melts the royal ......

That's not true! If/when royal is properly mixed there should not be a problem. It may soften it just a bit but it will NOT MELT!

How long ahead was the black color mixed? Did you use the icing right after coloring it? That is most likely the problem.
Also was the bc cold - like was the cake stored in the frig then removed for piping? That is a no-no also.

My suggestion is to mix about 1/2 cup royal with 1 1/2 to 2 cups of bc. It will hlep the bc crust over yet will be more stable for what you want to do.

Thank you !!! I will try mixing it ...I didnt do the frig so maybe its where I messed up the stenciling and tried to redo it by piping over the pattern it left ! I let you know how it turns out ! thxicon_smile.gif))

I'm crying with you tonight if that helps. icon_wink.gif

I don't want to give conflicting advice, but I too have heard that royal will not work on buttercream. Well, I've heard it will, but will not last longer than a day or so before breaking down. I hope it works out for you! Let us know.

This is an 'ol' wives tale' that just refuses to die icon_sad.gif

Experiement your self. That's the only way to know for sure.
Her problem may have more to do with humidity than royal vs bc.

I always make black from chocolate frosting. That way I don't have to use so much food color and doesn't tend to bleed like starting with vanilla buttercream.

I mix royal and buttercream together. It works great if you're doing brush embroidery and also with stencils...eventually hardens up just gives you a longer working time. Got this tip from Betty Van Nordstrom at an ICES convention. The whole room gasped and Betty just laughed....she was right!

Thank you guys for cheering me up icon_smile.gif

I made the royal icing and colored it the night before. So dont know!

After the advice I mixed it with the black buttercream and just free hand a design on it ,Didnt even attempt to do the stencil again lol! The black seemed to do better but still had some bleeding the next morning but not as much. I dont know what I did wrong with the stencil every side I stenciled at least half the icing pulled off with the stencil ,so now Im scared to attempt it again lol!!! Pic attached I put the bleeding side to the back. I havent heard from the bride yet sooo we will see . But , my grooms cake rocked lol . It was my first fondant 3d cake icon_smile.gif

You do great free hand work...why use a stencil at all. The cakes look great. I do have a piece of advice to add thu....I do a lot of lace and extension work on cakes and believe you me that I do them on BC just as well on fondant. Yes you do have to add RI and BC together to get the same look to BC...just let it rest for a little bit with a damp cloth or it so it doesn't dry out. I find that letting the darker colors rest causes no bleeding. Wonderful cakes thumbs_up.gif

You cakes are wonderful! Great piping! Regarding your issue...the grease in buttercream does indeed break down royal icing. I even keep two sets of piping bags for this exact reason - one for BC and one for Royal.

You have to let the BC crust (really well) before using the RI for the stencil....I have done the BC/RI design but the BC REAAAALLLLLY needs to be thoroughly "crusty icon_smile.gif"

From the thread "Royal Icing Decorations on cake question", I wrote:

Yes, grease-free utensils while you're making it, but it doesn't have to be a grease-free surface that you pipe it directly onto, nor completely dried to stop it from breaking down. (moisture is the culprit.)

There's a similar thread from a few days ago that discusses what causes royal icing to break down titled "Deciding between fondant, icing, gumpaste, and buttercream". I'll paste what I wrote below...
Here's the entire thread: http://cakecentral.com/cake-de.....html+icing

...you can apparently make royal and pipe it directly onto Crisco greased forms and pipe into cooking-sprayed foil-lined lily nails!)

If you'd like to read what others have experienced, TexasSugar says that it's caused by moisture in this thread "question about royal icing":
http://cakecentral.com/cake-de.....html+icing

and here "Royal icing decorations":
http://cakecentral.com/cake-de.....html+icing

my favorite "will piping gel break down royal icing":
http://cakecentral.com/cake-de.....html+icing

another favorite, "Royal Icing Lilies, Cooking Spray...":

That's weird... wonder if the links work for anyone (sounds like the OP was able to open/read).

Bottom line info in the links is that royal icing doesn't break down from grease, it's moisture.

If you'd like to search for the links, remember to use the word "and" between your keywords. For example, you could try "royal and icing and moisture" or "breakdown and royal". HTH.
