I've been asked to make the grooms cake for a friend of mine. She is expecting about 100 (that's if every one comes) and ordered a wedding cake to feed about that many people.

We were going back and forth and both NOT sure how big the grooms cake should be. I thought if the cake she ordered was for 100 then the grooms cake should feed about 75 people.

I know it is based on what the couple wants but I think it would be good to know so I could stear her in the right direction.

I always thought that the groom cake is something that is fun unless the bride tells you exactly what she wants. I love that BBQ pit Cake how are you going to do that?

I thought the norm was around 30-50 servings. But it all depends on what they want. I would say that grill would serve more. Usually the majority of servings comes from the wedding cake. I love that grill cake! good luck!

She thought about 75 people. I planned on doing the belly of the pit with strofoam covered in fondant and the top part the actual cake. I'm still not sure about the legs..maybe pvc pipes???

If she wants 75 and is willing to pay for 75 servings then give her that.

If they have a cake for 100, I doubt they really need 75 more servings and you could probably go downt o 50 and still have cake left over. But if they are fine with paying for it and are fine with left over, then make the amount that she is asking for.

Brides cake + groom's cake = number of people expected at the reception.

Or whatever they want to pay for., but 75 is really a lot of extra cake.

If it was my order, the bride's cake would be 75 servings and the groom's cake would be 25 servings.

I do it the same way as Leahs. However, if they want extra cake and don't mind paying for it with extra cake left over.... by gosh give it to them! icon_biggrin.gif

Many of my brides do the grooms cake for the rehearsal dinner and the wedding cake for the reception.

in the pic you supplied, the legs to to be 1/2" to 3/4" dowels.

these would be glued and screwed to bottom wood board and then again to the board the cake rests on

I'd make the brides cake 75 and the grooms 50...the extra 25 is for those who want to try both. But 100 and 75? There's going to be ALOT of extra cake left over.

I'm going to suggest her go with 50 servings then. I know she already ordered her wedding cake for the # of people she invited. I am not sure how many have RSVP'ed and actually intend on going. I would really hate for her to have all this cake to take home or a family member be stuck with it.

Thanks for the link Doug!

it almost looks like the bottom part of those grills is styrofoam and then in the center it looks like a division line between styro and real cake doesn't it?? Right about where you'd expect a division for the lid to open though. The bottom just seems to round and perfect for that to ALL be cake, how would it be supported under there if it were all cake?

I thought about doing the larger part in styrofoam since I learned how many servings a grooms cake should be (Thanks EVERYONE for schooling me) and the smaller part (right side) as cake. I know she was really wanting the cake to look like the picture. She said her fiance LOVES to BBQ.
