Ok so I had a woman email me about a "simple" three tier cake. I love when they say simple, like I'm just going to throw it together & there's no skill involved. At this point I have come to understand that the word simple is a keyword for "inexpensive" So I contact the woman and she wants a three tier or two double tiers covered in "perfectly smooth" fondant with a pink bow border and fresh tropical flowers on the top. OK...so we spoke a bit more and then she asked price I quoted her $175 and she hung up on me.....not a word just hung up!!!! I am in Long Island my price was not that high at all...what do these people think just because they say the word "simple" they should only be charged $30!!!! And I'm sorry but to make a "simple" cake with only a border the fondant has to be PERFECTION which is not SIMPLE!!!!! AARRGGG!!! I understand if you can't afford it or just don't want to pay that much for a cake...but at least say "no thanks" or something instead of just hanging up me, I swear these people have no manners!
Sounds cheap to me! How many was the cake supposed to feed? 3 tiers, fondant, ribbon and tropical flowers? She might just be calling you back after she checks around for prices on that cake!

It was a very inexpensive quote....that's why I was so shocked that she just HUNG UP!!!
That was rude! It's like someone calling you and the first thing out of their mouth is - Get me So and So! Sorry - I'm not your secretary!

I hate when I answer the phone at work, and the caller just says,
"Is he there?" No phone manners whatsoever
That's when I put them on hold and go get a cup of coffee. (No phone manners whatsoever?)
Your price is fine she is just cheap. Let her check around on prices and I bet she will be calling back if she's not to embarrassed. If it was me and she called back I would say sorry I just booked up for that day.
How frustrating! Just be thankful that she didn't waste any more of your valuable time than she did :>)
Some people are so rude over the phone. I can't even imagine treating people that way, I think you get better results with a positive attitude and kindness. At least you don't have to deal with her anymore!
That was very rude. To me, that price does sound inexpensive, especially being in the Long Island area.
Wow! That's not an unreasonable price at all! Quite a deal, really! I hate how rue some people can be when it comes to phone manners!
Hmmmm.....that is rude and a little unusual. Makes me think it's someone who wanted to get off the phone quickly once they got their answer. I think it was a competitor checking out your prices. Just a hunch...I could be wrong. Sorry it happened - your price was very good.

Um... am I missing something? How is calling a business and asking for an individual rude? What are they supposed to say? I'm dead serious here.

I think instead of saying "May I speak with so and so" the caller simply says "Is he there?" as though you are a psychic and know exactly who they are talking about. Like you aren't even worth wasting the breath to say the whole question and they just want to get on to the important people.
If she has the nerve to call back, then I would tell her the price has gone up! Then mark it up considerably.
please tell me you got her name, so that when she calls back all nice and friendly asking if you CAN do her cake.. YOU can hang up on her!!! that was a fabulous price

Ah... okay. That makes sense. I worked in offices in my previous life and never had anyone ask "Is he there?" Just goes to show how common courtesy is going out of favor.
The price doesn't matter. Even if you told her a million billion dollars hanging up was rude. No cake for her!
Thank you for understanding my wonderful caker's!!! I really could not believe the rudeness of this woman well.....NO CAKE FOR HER is right lol !!!
Oh I SO would have called her right back
"I'm so sorry, I think we got disconnected!"
I can't remember who said that maybe it was a competitor checking your prices but I agree that could have been exactly what it was. Even so...it was extremely rude to just hang up. People

I agree with those thinking it was a competitior. She may have been mad that you were undercutting her prices and was disgusted at you for your low quote of a cake that should obviously cost much more. Yes it was rude of her to hang up on you that way. Shame you couldn't call her right back like another poster suggested

A polite caller will identify him/herself, and ask to PLEASE speak to so-and-so. That's my rule, and I don't stray from it. For example, "Hi. This is Queen Elizabeth. May I please speak to Prince Charming?"
The "Is he there?" people can wait and whistle.
Then there are the airheads who respond to the "Who's calling, please?" question with just a first name. We have hundreds of clients, and we're supposed to know which one you are by just your first name?
Oh I SO would have called her right back

I've TOTALLY done this and it's hilarious!! One time a lady said, no I actually hung up the phone so you wouldn't hear me choke after hearing your price!! She actually SAID that!! LOL I laughed and said I was sorry that it was out of her budget, she said a proper goodbye before hanging up this time at least!

Got one of those once! Feeling a little feisty, I asked, "Bob Smith? Bob Jones? or Bob Brown?" (we had no Bob with any of those last names working there). Caller said, "Oh, I need Bob Johnson" and I said, "Oh him! Yeah, I always forget about THAT Bob!"
I couldn't add my comments to the bottom of this post because the window is jumping all over the place.
I certainly agree that a caller should identify himself when he's reached the department or secretary. I don't think such formality is required when the call is picked up by an operator.
I assume "Is he there?" is after you've answered with "Mr. So-and-so's office". Yeah. Those people can sit and stew in their own self-importance. I'll join ya in that cup of coffee.

Well, heck, THAT'S a good idea! Might start doing that to save my eyesight!

Too funny. I work in a small office and people always just ask for the first name we have to repeats so its fine that way. I hate it when I answer the phone and they think I am the lady that usually answers the phone and start their joking its frustrating.
