Trying to think of stuff that's less common....so no beach/water themes, no swimming pools, picnics, sun, luau, barbecue, backyard hammock themes...
I come up with lightning bugs. 
Or a swarm of bugs around a camping lantern. Okay, maybe not too appetizing....
Or is a beach/swimming related idea okay as long as it's a less-commonly-seen specific item rather than a "scene"? A tropical drink, snorkeling mask and flippers, a frame backpack, a fruit tree?

Well,
She doesn't mind doing beachy related ideas and things such as that just nothing too common. She was looking online and all the beach type cakes she sees have just sea shells and waves and chairs and things like that. She said it could be anything to do with summer as long as it isn't common. Her wish is not very specific and I think that's where I had my problem thinking up an idea. Maybe something to do with a summer vacation or such as that would be interesting. She had a request to make it very interesting but also to be just a two tier cake.

That is so cute! It could even be tweaked a bit to make it your own. Maybe I could put a juicer on the cutting board as well. I love the marbling done on that cutting board. It looks so real! Thanks for your idea! Probably could make the items on top of the cutting board out of rice crispy treats. It might be a bit hard to carve them out of cake.

I am glad I read all the posts before adding my 2 cents. The first thing that came to mind was a pitcher of iced tea or lemonade with frosted glasses sitting a silver tray. Must be a KY girl thing with our 98 degree temps lately.. 102 today. aggghh...
Or a beach snack shack. Or surfboard/boat rental shack.
If you'd rather not sculpt, how about a bottom tier covered with "sand" and a top tier with fondant cutouts all around the sides representing different beach-scene stuff...the rental shack, the hot dog stand, sunshade and beach ball, sand castle.
Or, same concept but not beach, make the bottom tier mostly "grass" with a few flowers, maybe a picket fence. Then around the top tier you have the kid's lemonade stand, the guy napping in a hammock, the BBQ grill, the sprinkler on with kids running through it....
I'm envisioning something like an illustration in a children's book, a "busy street scene" double-page spread sort of thing, only wrapped around the side of a round cake tier. You could include all sorts of fun details, to make it "very interesting," but using mostly cutouts rather than tons of modeling it shouldn't be too hard to do?
