I am making a character from the new movie "Despicable Me"...the yellow one... Well it is 13 inches high. Since it is high, I am alittle worried about delivery. Do I stab a dowel all the way through from top to bottom? Will that be enough? I have never made such a tall narrow cake before...help me please!...I dont want it to tip over..Yikes!
Yes, if it were me I would put two sharpened dowels thru it and hammer them straight into the board underneath. Not sure how you feel about chilling it but with the ingredients I use I do and I feel it makes my cakes stay together for delivery.
Thanks Toptier....I will do that. I also chill it in refrigerator for about one hour prior to delivery too and yes it does help with stability.
I would put boards under each 2 layer 4" high cake or 2 layers torted (layer, filling, layer, ice, dowel, board then repeat). Then center dowel down the center.
I often use the wooden skewers, they are small but a couple should give you just enough to stabilize.

I agree!!!!! With 2 full length dowels, that cake can't go anywhere--as long as it's stacked nice and level !
