In August I will be doing my friend's wedding cake, and on it she wants some jewels. Of course I opened my big mouth stating that I don't like putting unedible things on my cakes (annoying to have to pick things off). I seen I can make isomalt jewels and have purchased some Clear Venuance Pearls. Next challenge will to see if I can actually make the jewels.

The question that is coming up is if the jewels will sit on the side of a buttercream covered or fondant covered cake (four tiers, only the base will be covered in fondant, all having some jewels coming down the sides). Anyone that has any experience with attaching the jewels to buttercream especially (read on this forum to use RI on fondant?) would be of great assistance here. I'm going to attempt to make some jewels the last week in July... icon_eek.gif

The bakery I worked for did a very large wedding cake using 'jewels'. We actually made them out of sugar (not knowing much about isomalt at the time...!) Anyway, we attached to the cake with buttercream. They were along the sides of the cake and help up well. Was that your question? You know you don't have to make them...you can buy them online. At the time we made this cake there were NO sites offering them anywhere! I'd have killed to have been able to buy them! But isomalt is a lot more stable than sugar so you should be able to do it. I would practice though...a LOT! icon_biggrin.gif

Thanks carmijok, I have seen them online, but they're soooo expensive, and I'm already doing this cake basically for free (the price I gave her MAYBE covers the materials...not even close to the time it'll take).

I guess I should just do a practice run. I am going to see if I can actually make them, and if I can't, resort to the bought ones.
