My grandmother's birthday is coming up and her favorite meal when she eats out is a grilled cheese sandwich. She's so cute, if it's not on the menu she asks if someone can make it for her. When I was discussing plans for her upcoming party she joked that maybe they'll make grilled cheese sandwiches for dinner (not even serious) but I said that might be a fun cake to make! I have some ideas of cutting it corner to corner with fondant as the "cheese." Has anyone done anything like this? My biggest concern is making the tops and sides actually look like bread and the crust.
Thanks!
Traci
HEHE how cute. Gotta love those nanas. Both of mine are long gone but I share one with my roomate. What if you use a 12x 12 x 2 pan tort it. Make a second one and use that for the top. Then try MMF color some the color of cheese. The rest brownish spotted arange it like you would a grilled cheese sandwhich. That would be really cute and your grandmother would love it. Hope this helps. MC
Traci, you can make square cakes, fill them with orange BC, making it look like gooey cheese, stack, cut diagonally and separate as if it is actually a sandwich and ice the halves golden brown and then spray lightly with the darker brown Wilton spray color (you know, the 'grilled' part!) and ice the outer edges with dark brown. Oh, but use white or yellow cake.... hmmm... sounds like something I'd like to make my little grilled cheese fanatic!

That sounds like a great idea. I've actually served grilled cheese with tomato soup for dinner before! (when we were in a hurry and we have 2 kids age 2 and under, hehe)
I was thinking to make the toasted brown area on top...maybe you could pipe some brown icing randomly on parchment paper with a small tip and then squish it onto the top? Just an idea, I've never tried it...
grilled cheese sandwich, tomato soup and corn chips were my favourite weekend-lunch as a child. now i like my grilled cheese with jalapeno!
you could actually make individual "grilled cheese sandwich" dessert cakes which might be cute:
bake pound or dense white cake cake in an extra-large loaf pan. freeze it for easier slicing. make slices the thickness of bread, butter one side of each lightly and actually grill or lightly fry the buttered side. after they cool you could sandwich them with cream cheese frosting tinted to the colour of cheddar (if that's what she's used to). slice them diagonally.
this would be my alternative to a traditional birthday cake, but if you're going for a big presentation cake, i would definitely go with fondant, and use the spray colour or "painted on" diluted colour to get the crusts brown and the bread toasty-looking.
Traci J,
If you go to www.charmcitycakes.com and then go to the Special Events Cakes and scroll through a bunch of them, you will find he has done an AWESOME sandwich cake. Thought it might inspire you. Hope this helps. Don't have a clue how they did it.
gdixoncakes: i checked out that link, and yes indeed, nice BLT cake. it appears to have been done with fondant, with airbrushing on the "crusts". i was just thinking, Tracij, that if you're going to airbrush (rather than paint) the crust, that you might want to cut wax paper the shape of the "slice of bread" and place it on top to protect it as you spray the sides (crusts). definitely check out that link for inspiration!
Wow! Thanks, that website is fabulous! Thank you for your ideas. I had thought about making some fondant chips on the side, but I'll have to think on that a bit.
That sounds like such a cute idea...to get the toasted look, how about dipping a fresh sponge in tan/brown coloring and kinda dab it on..like sponge painting!
If you're going for realistic over everything, I'd sugest making sure to get the shape trimed right (not jsut square, but bread shaped) and torting and filling with BC. I did a cheeseburger cake using BC (wilton's Golden Yellow is a perfect cheese color but I bet any other brand would be too) and the key to geting it to look melted is to smooth it with a finger or spatula diped it water (shake off the exsess, but don't dry). The wierd thing I'd sugest is to flip the cut side out after torting, and not frost the top and sides, just use a bunch of "cheese." Then use a sponging or airbrush method for "crust" and "grilled." Or even consider acctually grillin the flat sides! It would be really great tasting to fry the cake in butter and sugar. It would kind of carmelize the cut side of the cake and look really realistic. It probably wouldn't be too hard if you have a big enough skilet or pancake grill, and you'd only have to do the one side (top). Just melt some butter and spread it aruond and sprinkle granulated sugar on the butter. Then plop the cake on top. Anyway... its an idea... Good luck with whatever you do!
If you wanna make chips use a line impression mat to make the ridges then cut out round or oval shapes. you can also use colored marshmallow fluff for melted cheese.
there is a really cute grilled cheese cake at http://familyfun.go.com/recipes/special/feature/famf0303_feat_cheese/
It was a april fools day trick, that just might work for you

Kat,
That's perfect! It's exactly what I want it to look like -- only on a larger scale. I do want to make it one cake instead of multiple ones. I don't think I can toast such a big piece - though maybe under the broiler?
I do think I'd like a bit more frosting though so I may end up frosting it instead. I haven't completely made up my mind. I had better soon since the cake is due this Sunday!
Thanks for the great ideas everyone!
Well, I got the cake done today. It's in my gallery. I'm really happy with the way it turned out. Thanks so much for all of your input. It helped out a lot.

Wow! That turned out WONDERFULLY!! I never thought about using the broiler, thats a great idea! Hope you don't mind if I use the idea some time...
