What have I gotten myself into?

I'm going to be making a 3-D Army tank shaped cake for my brother who is leaving for boot camp this weekend. I have learned from this site (which rocks!) that I'll need to freeze the bottom layers before carving them out. Disaster averted thumbs_up.gif What I need to know is what type of cake should I use? I usually use an enhanced cake recipe. Will it be strong enough? The cake will be a total of 4 layers. Should I use dowels?

Any suggestions would be helpful icon_smile.gif

From experience myself- I would put in a dowel or two. I made a fishing boat that had several layers in it as an anniversary cake for my brother-in-law, and the cake started to fall apart by the time we go to the party icon_cry.gificon_cry.gif
I look back at it and laugh because the party was supposed to be for my brother-in-law/sister-in-law and for my husband and I, and my husband and I had a BIG argument at the house where it was at. We both got over it right there but what irony icon_lol.gif
