Does anyone know how the layered effect is done? Is it piped straight on the cake? How to get the gold and silver colors? Is there a videoo tutorial for this? Help please...

Here is her website

It's called the Lambeth Method.
It is, for the most part, piped directly on the cake, layering borders with different sizes and shapes of tips using royal icing, rarely buttercream.
The gold & silver is handpainted on using luster dust mixed with clear drinking alcohol or lemon extract.

It's rarely done/taught because it's labor intensive. The best written reference is an out of print book by Joseph Lambeth.

If you look at Sifbeth's site she has a tutorial on making a simple lambeth type piping on a cake. It is a simplified version but it makes for a very nice finished product. Just click on her tutorial's and then on the lambeth link.

I completely missed this thread. I own SifBeth - if you have any questions in regards to a specific design, feel free to PM me.

I just wanted to say that I think your cakes are amazing and love that you are still using this style of decorating and doing it so incredibly well. Thank you for being so willing to help others learn a little bit about this style of decorating. icon_smile.gifthumbs_up.gif

My secret mission is to ensure, that when I get married, there'll be a cake decorator nearby, who can make me a 7 tier Lambeth cake icon_biggrin.gif

Gefion, your last post blew me away! Because you do this style of piping, I just assumed you were older middle aged! See, this is proof you should NEVER assume. I hope you get the wedding cake you want!!!

Oh no, I'm only in my late 20's (very late 20's). But I do have a few grey hairs. I blame it on the late night decorating.

I'm glad to hear my website has been of use.

This is the cake I did using sifbeth swan tutorial. http://cakecentral.com/gallery/1837962
I learnt a lot mainly to let things dry fully and to be patient and not play with things and break them !!!! icon_redface.gif . I 'tried' the simple lambeth cake but my consistency was wrong and I am looking for some better tips the right size. She does lovely cakes and will be trying again soon.

Not to steal the thread, but I taught someone in Texas how to do this, so she would be somewhat local to teach you all! There are two of us in San Diego that teach this method and actually quite a few across the US. I think someone in Kansas or Ohio teaches it too, she would be pretty close to have come on over (and she is fabulous!!) Hopefully I'm teaching this in Omaha in September if you want to come up there icon_lol.gif

The tutorial on the Sifbeth site is wonderful isn't it? It's been a long time since I visited her site, isn't the black cake stunning!!

And although I'm not local to Gefion, I would come to Denmark to decorate your 7 tier Lameth style wedding cake!!! Always wanted to go there!

Sweetflowers, if you figure out who does it in Ohio, would you please let me know? I know someone who would love to learn this method!

Did anyone see the episode of Cake Boss where the Valastros went to Italy and Buddy made a 7-layer cake for his cousin's wedding--entirely decorated with piping. It was extrordinary. And huge.

I'm not sure if this is the cake,

but watch the episode if it is rerun--it shows Buddy doing some terrific string work (swags) while he's chattering away...
