this isn't a complete disaster, but I hate myself for it. I did a cake for a cousin's party at the last minute. only because it was boobs, and well, I wanted to make boobs! ha ha. I wrote his name on it like a necklace and spelled it wrong. all those people saw it and it was my own stinkin' family! what a jerk! I felt so stupid. thankfully, it was family and it was free. still though! thankfully my cakes for other "real" customers went off ok!

This brings to mind something that happened on a busy Graduation weekend years ago at the bakery. We had 100's of cakes and had worked many hours of overtime....needless to say we were all getting a little punchie!
One of the decorators transposed letters and wrote, "Congratulations Brain" rather than "Congratulations Brian".....LOL!

It was quickly repaired, but the graduate's Mother didn't see the humor in it that we did....after all....it was accolades for graduating and being a "brain"!

I made an anniversary cake as a gift for my best friend and her husband and I accidentally spelled my best friend's name wrong. I didn't even notice until she pointed it out. I was very embarrassed but she just laughed at me. icon_rolleyes.gif

I know exactly how you feel! I've done the same thing. Once its was the name spelled wrong, the other was the greeting. I wrote Birtday instead of Birthday. I'd left out the h and didn't even notice my blunder! icon_redface.gif

I did this just recently too!
Nearly 10 years of baking & you'd think you wouldn't do such a thing.. Being exhausted & in a hurry mistakes happen, always on Fridays too... & just like you I took pics & was so proud I sent them via text to DH (who is stationed in Afghanistan).. Neither the graduate nor his family nor I noticed "Adnrew" until Sun morning when DH sends message back saying that was a funny way to spell "Andrew"!! & this wasn't a freebie either! UGH... while they were good natured about it I did the appropriate thing & refunded the money. Oh well proves were human after all.

I had one of those moments the other day where I was delievering a cake and it was for "Happy Birthday Judy"...and all of a sudden this sick felling cake over me while I was en route and I was thinking " Did he say "Julie?" Or "Judy" ??? ANd I kept going back and forth over and over in my head until I got there and I was so frantic by the time I walked in with the cake, it was the first thing I blurted out. "You said Judy right???" LOL my customer just laughed and said "ya". And boy he really could have had some fun with me at that moment if he wanted to! OH and I remember in the beginning it seemed like everytime I turned around I was writing BIRTDAY.

I remember an episode of Ace of Cakes where they said spelling birthday "birtday" was the most common spelling mistake....I have done that many times, but SO FAR have noticed once I did it and was able to repair....so far...lol

I was watching 18 Kids and Counting--I saw by the preview it was going to be a show where they threw a baby shower for the DIL and of course I knew there had to be a cake to be seen.

Sure enough, the bakery spelled the name wrong...no sweat. Momma Duggard took a toothpick carefully lifted and adjusted the letters and presto.. no sweat. I love the way that family deals with things--no tantrums, no blame game. Just fix and move along! And she did a fine job, btw, couldn't tell there was a mistake in the first place.

Sorry for your mix-up, but I'm loving the topic!

We adopted our son in 2008 and we had a party to celebrate the finalization of his adoption, which happened when he was six months old. I ordered a photo cake from a local grocery store bakery (now I've taken decorating classes and do my own cakes, that way I can be the one to screw them up!). I asked that they write "It's Official!" and "Forever Family" above and below the photo of us with the judge. I rushed in to pick up the cake just before the party, only to discover it said:

It's Officals!

I had a similar thing happen. I just had started my new business and was so happy with the cake. I took pictures of it right before the customer picked it up. I downloaded my pictures and noticed the mistake as I was posting it on my website. I had forgotten part of the H in happy. The cake wasn't to be picked up until the next day, so thank goodness I decided to download my pictures right away that day.

I know double check everything. icon_smile.gif

This reminds me of when I was making christmas cakes (Had about 12 to do) Everything was done and all I had to do was pipe 'Happy Chisrtmas' on each cake. I got a phone call on boxing day from one customer laughing so much as she said thank you for the cake it was wonderful but one little error. I had managed pipe Happy Birthday on hers!!!! guess I need to remember to concentrate a little more next time.

Now I double check everything, pipe it on the work table before piping it on to the cake too, just so the cake is not messed up!
Happens to the best of us too! icon_lol.gificon_lol.gificon_lol.gif

LOL great thread.

my friend sent me this and I had to share it with you! This place is only about 15 minutes from me! icon_wink.gif

"My cousin Rachael ordered a cake for her brother and my cousin Ben from the bakery at NAME OF BAKERY EDITED. He is moving to Texas and she went up in person to order the cake from the bakery. She gave the colors and asked if they would put the shape of the State of Texas on the cake. I have attached the picture of the cake she picked up yesterday to take to his going away party. Thought you guys would appreciate this especially people from Portland."

And look at the cake! LMBO! OKAY! Cake photo didnt post, so look for it in my photos, heehee
