Hello all -- I'm new to the forum & am making my first baby shower cake at the end of July. I want to make a pair of the baby Converse sneakers, for which I found the template & instructions here on CC.

My question is this....would you suggest making them with fondant, gum paste, or a 50/50 mix? My plan was to use a 50/50 mix -- I'm afraid they won't harden enough with 100% fondant, but I'm afraid I won't be able to work quickly enough with 100% gum paste before it starts to harden & crack. Has anyone else made them, and if so, what did you use?

TIA!

Practice making them first with some stiff fondant, but make the real thing from gumpaste. I find that 50/50 does not dry hard enough for me.

I've made several pair with a 50/50 mix or fondant with Tylose added and had great luck. I had plenty of time to work with it, and it dried nice and hard for me.

I make them out of gumpaste because I like them to dry HARD! I made a set for my nieces baby shower cake a year ago and she still has them in a clear acrylic box.

I also used the MMF with Tylose powder and it dries really hard.

I like to make shoes out of gumpaste as well, so they are rock hard. You can add some tylose to fondant to make gumpaste if you like the shades of fondant better (like black). If they are rock hard, the customer probably will want to save them icon_smile.gif
