well, I'd take the images I found with google

http://www.google.com/images?q=cow+spots&oe=utf-8&client=firefox-a&rlz=1R1GGLL_en___US359&um=1&ie=UTF-8&source=univ&ei=PvgkTK7iAsKclgesjKnPAw&sa=X&oi=image_result_group&ct=title&resnum=1&ved=0CCUQsAQwAA

coloring page version: http://ysostorytime.pbworks.com/f/Cow+spots.bmp

and just use any combination of them to create spots.

print out and then cut out to get templates.

No real pattern to them...just random splotches all over the cow.

----

to make without pattern

use fondant.

break off multiple random size balls.

squish balls into rounded (but not perfectly round) odd shapes

put on mat

roll thin and flat.

will get all kinds of random spot shapes.

peel off mat and apply to cake.

Is this what you're looking for? I would think cow spots would be simple. It's just a bunch of misshappen circles all over in no particular way. Hope that helps a little! icon_smile.gif

I've done a few "cow" cakes. I just roll out the black and take a knife and cut out random shapes - think clouds. . .

Really? Did you google what cow spots look like? there really isn't a pattern to them!

Are you working with BC or fondant? Cows are like snow flakes~ no 2 are alike!! If working with BC you could randomly do splatter-like spots in white and black (or brown) and then smooth with the viva method. I'm not experienced with fondant so I can't help you with that. good luck!!

I like Doug's idea!

When I did my cow cake and had to do spots I just tried not to do perfectly round spots that were all the same size. Cow spots can really come in any shape or size, so there isn't a right or wrong here, you just want to go for random sizes.

Don't make it hard on yourself. Follow Dougs advice or just roll out some fondant take a knife to it and start cutting.

When I had to do a zebra print cake I spent alot of time looking of 'patterns' to use for it. I realised after some wasted time that I really didn't need a pattern at all, and believe me I'm not an artist or one of those that can draw either.

learned long ago to avoid cutting.

cutting = knives = bloodshed!
