How many of you routinely paint cakes? I just did this one and loved it! It was a nice change from the usual.

I love the technique, too. Your topper is great, really adds to the look.

Did you know that you can paint on BC just as easily?

Beautiful work, both of you!! I would never dare try to paint on buttercream (I'm a chicken, and I really only do fondant because I'm terrible with the bc icon_sad.gif ), but I've had a great time with the painting. Two examples ...

Thanks ColeAlayne, and I don't have an airbrush, either icon_razz.gif .

emiyeric - love your cakes! You really should try the technique on BC, the painting covers a multitude of flaws icon_wink.gif .

is there a special trick to painting on BC? I'd be afraid it would make my icing melt or something LOL Do you use the gel color + vodka? Thats what I do for fondant and it works great.

Yes, I use gel colors thinned with vodka. I'd say the only "trick" is to use very soft artist's brushes -higher quality than the craft-type.

Spread some (crusting) BC on the side of a cake pan and practice - you'll be surprised at how easy (and fun) it is! icon_smile.gif

So tell us how you did this painting -- did you dilute gel colors with Vodka? Or do you have a different technique?

Wow! Those example pictures are all beautiful! I am going to be making a carousel cake in a few days, and I'm planning on hand painting the horses for a more authentic look, but I've never done it before. Any advice?

I have been having a lot of fun painting on cakes--it adds a whole different dimension and style. I don't have an airbrush either, so for this cake I used small spray bottles and filled them with my colors diluted with vodka and just misted. The rest is hand brushed--fun!

I love to paint on cakes. It opens up a whole new realm of possibilities when designing a cake. I painted the base of each tier on my fantasy garden cake in my photos (it was in the June issue of CC mag) I painted each base green and used longer strokes to have it resemble grass instead of covering in green fondant. I loved the dimension it gave the cake.
