My Dad absolutely loves Spice cake with whip cream so I thought I would make him a spice cake with IndyDebi's buttercream icing. I made the icing a couple days ago and tonight I turned the oven on to preheat it while I was eating dinner. Went back about 30 minutes later and the oven NEVER heated up, the cook top worked fine (cooked dinner on it) but the oven will not come on. So what can I do to bake this cake, can't go to Mom's to bake it, Dad is there. I got out my Roaster Oven and set it up and turned it on. I mixed up one box mix of cake and put it in an 8" pan (could possibly use a 10") and put it in the roaster. I can't believe it, it baked great. Baked the second one as well. I am supposed to take biscuits and gravy to church in the morning as well because our Pastor and his wife is moving away, so I decided to try the biscuits and put a 9 X 13 cake pan in the roaster with 8 biscuits and they baked perfectly also. I will have to bake the rest of them in the morning while I make the gravy. I am so happy. I hope it doesn't take much to get the oven fixed because I still need to bake a cake as a final farewell to the pastor in a few weeks, but at least I know I can bake an 8" and possibly a 10" if not.

Just had to share my experience tonight. Thanks for listening.

Thanks, but I can't take the full credit for it. My hubby suggested that I try the roaster. Now to sneak a lemon cake in it for him tomorrow.

That's sweet icon_smile.gif I'm sure he will appreciate that. And good to know about the heating element...just in case this happens to me. It's bound to; everything else has happened! haha

Im right there with you...if it can happen it will happen to me. icon_eek.gif First time my heating element went out I freaked out of my mind.. I had cakes in the oven !!! Nobody had my heating element, for gas stove over 10 years old. Lowes told me it would take 2 weeks to order!! icon_mad.gif

I ended up going to a propane gas supply company to get mine (thankfully they were local). It is late the next night, i searched all day for the element and then a miracle happened..
There was a fair that weekend and they were closed.. They are right beside the fairgrounds. so, I was telling a friend about my crisis and she knew the owner..she called him up and he opened the store for me about 11 pm. He was at the fair, behind his store. I got my element and he gave me his home number incase it happend again. icon_biggrin.gificon_biggrin.gif He is one of my heroes!!!

I hope it's only the heating element. The broiler element won't come on either. DH thinks it may be the controls because the broiler doesn't work either. Does anybody else have an electric range that has this problem as well?

There was a thread a few weeks ago about baking cakes on barbecue grills. Some people have had great success with it. It's on my list of things to try.

My oven went out a while back...it was the thermostat. Took 2 days to get the part (local appliance repair shop ordered it for me) and about 10 minutes to replace it (if even that long). The part was less than $20. Easy fix.

We'd had a bad storm that took out the power for a week. My kids remember all the food cooked that week as the best this or best that...stew on a charcoal grill...yeast rolls 'baked' in a cast iron dutch oven placed on top of a kereosene heater (it was winter btw). Those really were the best yeast rolls ever! icon_biggrin.gif I never could get a decent cup of coffee though icon_cry.gif

tesso mine is a propane oven too. it did this a couple years ago. worked fine ... then stopped... then all of a sudden worked fine for a few months... then one day i baked something for lunch... planned the oven for dinner.. and that was the last of it. it didn't work that nite.

i forgot to mention too our oven and cook top which is seperate from the oven- is about as old as i am almost. its a "double" wall oven but mostly one oven with the broiler under it. so i don't count it as a Double oven.

hubby wants to take it out and put in an ovenrange and with my back problems i've been fighting it lol. i like my wall oven.

someday though i wish to have Two wall ovens side by side, not stacked on top of one another
