I am trying to make my husband a 3D Firetruck for fathers day. Does anyone have any tips for me?
Do you have a specific issue? Do you want to know about carving, fondant, buttercream, etc?

-------------
basically a big rectangle of cake.
start with a 9x13.
split in half long ways to get two 4.5x13 pieces.
stack on top of each other.
carve out the little joint behind the cab and the body.
and then deco and detail.
can get fancier by cutting out top of body so it looks like it has a ladder well.
and here's a sketch to give you an idea of how the basic body would be it would be using the 9x13 split and carved.
finally -- if you want to raise it up off the board so it looks like it is actually riding on wheels, see this diagram

and for fun -- what happens when dog attacks cake built this way!

I know how to work w/ buttercream and rolled buttercream. I am not sure how to get the shape.
