Kiddie Cakes- Bc Or Fondant?

I have 2 cakes for Sat., a fire truck and #3/race track. These are freebies for friends so I can get the practice and build a portfolio. I think fondant might make for a nicer, cleaner looking cake, but buttercream might be more kid-friendly. I can't imagine my 3 yr old eating it, but he's rather picky. I would be using an MMF if I did the fondant.

My kids, and nieces /nephews love MMF, they are a little disappointed when I don't use it. And I make sure there is at least 1 layer of buttercream in the middle in case someone doesn't want to eat the outside.

kids don't care. it's sugary, it's sweet, it's cake. They're happy. It's my opinion that kids don't like things because adults teach them not to like things ..... by little comments such as "you're actually going to eat that stuff?"

Some of the biggest fun I ever had was watching kids pull the fondant off a cake once they realized that everything "sproinging"off of it was edible. The adults were horrified and the kids thought that I was the bomb. I think if people would just look at fondant in its own category, they would realize it's just a sweet piece of chewy stuff. That's fine dining in my book.

But, just to be clear, I do appreciate a healthy layer of buttercream under that sweet, chewy stuff!

I think most kids would DEFINITELY prefer bc over fondant.

My daughter loves MMF and regular wilton fondant. I agree with previous poster, if it is sweet they will eat it

Ok, then I'm gonna need some help with coloring. Red and black are the colors for each of these cakes. I bought some Wilton's Ready Made deco bc frosting in red 'cuz it's just easier and I know I can get that to black, but getting the super white MMF to red and black might be tricky. I have some pomegranate juice on hand that i can use in place of water. If I use cocoa powder will that make it easier to lift to red? I have some americolor xmas red, and wilton red-red and no taste red. Are there any other tips & tricks or is there a tutorial somewhere?

I'm sure there are a lot more people out there that can give you some great tips, my first thought though was to make sure you mix your gel color into your melted marshmallows before you add it to the powdered sugar. It will give you a good color without all the kneading later on.
