I'm just a hobby baker and I've done a few cake for my neighbors and family. My neighbor called today and asked if I could make a cake for her daughter-in-law for this Friday. This is not a problem for me as I have all the stuff I need to make a cake. I ask what type of cake. She says a two layer, 8 inch round. No problems so far. I asked about decorations and she says "Anything Blue". icon_confused.gif Okay...a woman's b-day cake in blue. I can do something, right? Then she tells me that her DIL is a professional cake decorator at a local grocery chain. icon_eek.gif NOW I'm stressed!! I want this cake to look awesome, but I have no idea what to do. I was going to just put on a few blue flowers and a blue border with the Happy Birthday slogan. I think this will look pretty plain. Oh, and she also wants Cool Whip frosting. I asked if buttercream for decorations would be okay and she said yes. Any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks!

You could tint your bc a sky blue, then decorate with daisies, and pipe a grass border. I love the design where the flower stems go way up and some of the petals are on top of the cake and some on the sides - I hope that makes sense.

I bet she'll be happy and appreciative no matter what, because somebody baked for HER! icon_smile.gif

What about scrolls? I think scrolls are classy but not something you would find on a grocery store cake.

I would go to 'Search' in this site and type in 'Blue' and see what kinds of cakes using blue come up. You'll get all kinds of inspiration here if you're stuck. There's a lot of creative bakers out there and I love to get ideas from them. thumbs_up.gif

I have a suggestion. It was a cake that I did for an anniversary and I am sorry that I don't have any picutres but it looks amazing and beautiful. I did it on a square cake but you could do it for the round. Maybe do the base color as the sky blue. Then on the sides pipe a black lattice pattern. Where the line cross do either a little sky, teal or dark blue dots or a mini swirl. On the top of the cake that I did I piped a black victorian swirl ( connecting series of swirls) around the the edge about a 1/4 of the way in width. but on the corners I made a branch heading inwards toward the center just to break it up and make a little more somthing for the eye. For the circle cake maybe just do the branches in a curl, still going out towards the center and just choose your "corners" . I know that the different designs on the side and then the top seem like they will clash and I thought so too. But the husband wanted it and it actually looked really good. The only other thing that I could suggest to add a little feminine touch or bling would to either put some bright blue dragees on the ends of the swirls. But if you don't have anything like that then just pipe some dots with RI and paint them with a blue luster dust. I hope this helps!
