I will begin attending Pastry School within the next couple of months and one of the things we have to purchase for our uniform is footwear that must be a non-skid sole and closed toe made for the professional kitchen or medical industry. The school recommended Dansko, but I wanted to see if anyone else had any recommendations of shoes that met the above-mentioned criteria and that you found to be comfortable when standing on your feet most of the day. Thank you!

My Danskos hurt my feet and my back. I like my Klogs much better. They are lighter and less expensive. I got them at a medical supply store after a nurse recommended them.

Crocs is now making work shoes...closed toe and skid resistant...I love them and have 3 different styles ( even one with a little bit of a heel for this short girl !)....colors are still plain...black, brown and white, I think.Check out their website and click 'work shoes'. Good Luck

I go to a culinary school and we have to have non slip shoes and most of the people either cheat and just wear black shoes or have the culinary crocs. I cheated for a while and just more regular crocs and paid the price when I fell on my butt. I now own 2 pairs of culinary crocs and havent slipped since. I do want a pair of the Dansko ones though. I have a few pairs of their shoes and love them just no culinary ones yet.

I wore Danskos for years and still have numerous pairs of them **However** a few years ago they moved their manufacturing to China and the sizing has become a little inconsistent. I now only buy Sanita, the "Original" Dansko company. Sanita doesn't have as many styles, but the shoes are excellent. If you know your size, then buy off Ebay.

I love my Dansko's...and I am glad to know what Leah shared. They tend to be a little inconsistent these days. I am going to check out Sanita icon_smile.gif

When I went to Pastry School, I wore a pair of Doc Marten shoes that I had from when I waited tables. They were kind of expensive initially, but I wore them for years before they wore out. While I was in Pastry School, I worked at a bakery in the mornings and had class at night so I wore those shoes from 7am to 10pm, 5 days a week for the entire time I was in school.

Hope this helps some.. icon_smile.gif

I've known some waitresses and cafeteria workers that ordered non-slip sytles from Shoes for Crews.

Word of caution about Danskos-if you have problems spraining/rolling your ankles these shoes will make it worse!

I had a pair of Danskos that I wore religiously-wore them at work, at home, in different countries, BUT, I sprained my ankle quite a few times in them! I think they are very comfy and since they last years you can't really complain about the price, but I had to give them up and wear something with more ankle support. My friend had the same problem with her Danskos.

My hubby buys these! Loves them, and all the staff at his restaurant wear them too. Very comfortable.

I needed a pair of nonskids quick, and found Safetrax brand clogs at KMart. They were $20 and, by far, are the most comfortable pair of shoes I've ever owned.
That was about 2 1/2 years ago and I still wear that same pair all the time.
Looks like they may not carry the clogs anymore and the price has gone up a little bit, but I recommend them highly.

Klogs makes a great shoe. Really comfortable and non skid. I love the fact that it has a removable insert that can be replaced.

I am very lucky when it comes to buying shoes. My DD is the Manager of 3 high end shoe stores in our metro area. I get shoes for gifts a lot! (she sells Dansko, Ecco, Clarks, Keens, UGG, etc.) I have 2 pairs of PINK Ugg slippers too! icon_biggrin.gif

I second Shoes for Crews. They last forever, the nonskid is very dependable, and they come in cute styles too!

A con would be the price, but mine lasted for like 7 years. I haven't thrown them out, just haven't worn them.

What is a good brand primarily for comfort? I am on my feet ALL day, and by the end of the day my feet and legs are killing me. I don't mind spending the extra money if they will help.

Leah, are Sanitas good for that?

I've tried them all in 25+ years of baking. I like Merrills the best because not only are they non-slip they are lightweight and have holes for "breathing".

luvbakin, all I can say is that the Sanitas work for me, and I'm typically on my feet up to 20 hours a day. On the odd day where I'm wearing m tennis shoes (Nike) I'm dyin' after 6 hours.
