Any advice on the perfect chocolate cake that can hold fondant? I have an order for a chocolate cake but the client did not give me a lot of details as to which type of filling and frosting to use. It will be for a husband birthday for 20 ppl. I mostly make cupcakes and just cakes for my small family events. Any ideas on what pan size should I use plus the perfect filling and frosting. The only thing I know is that the guy loves dark chocolate. Should I use a chocolate filling or that would be too much?

I have found the darn good choc cake or the WASC chocolate version taste great and are sturdy. IMO
The chocolate version of the WASC, sooo yummy, it is the only chocolate cake recipe i use...
My suggestion use a dark chocolate cake mix and strawberry cream cheese filling. I've had a bit of experience making a very similar cake. It held fondant well.
I made a Swiss chocolate cake (10 in round) into a cute 3D flop earred bunny. After the cake was cool, I cut it in half down the middle. Before I put them together side by side cut side down I filled it with strawberry cream cheese filling. I used a buttercream frosting tinted pale green then covered the bunny body with white chocolate shavings. Then used fondant for the bunny face and ears. Here's a pic of my bunny cake.

I love all chocolate, so for me chocolate cake with whipped chocolate ganache filling and chocolate buttercream is the best!
I'd definitely suggest a dark chocolate ganache for filling, &/or under fondant.

my absolute hands-down best chocolate cake recipe I have found thus far (I keep trying more complicated ones with more ingredients & keep going back to my tried-and-true), is the Duncan Hines Chocolate Fudge mix & substitute brewed coffee for the water. easy peasy, super yummy & chocolatey
There's a recipe in the recipes section for "super enchanced" box mix. It calls for 3 T of cocoa powder added to the ingredients when using a chocolate cake mix. I just made it today and used "dark chocolate" cocoa powder. The mix I used was the Triple fudge, I think it's duncan hines. Yumm. I scooped out a cup of the batter and bake a little 6" round to have a taste test. It was yummy. I also made a vanilla version of this recipe. I found the vanilla cake is just a tad more sturdy than the chocolate one. But still good enough to layer or stack. For filling and icing, I'm using crusting cream cheese butter cream. Nice flavor combo. A whipped white chocolate ganache would be yummy also.

I second this. I also add about 2 T of dark cocoa powder and an extra wee little splash of oil in addition to the coffee. Super chocolate!!!
Though, admittedly, I may have overdone it the one time I filled that cake with a soft-cooked fudge....that may have been a little much.
For twenty people, you could just make a nice layer cake. I just did one to rave reviews in a 12" round. Chocolate lovers love chocolate.
Hershey's chocolate cake recipe, add a tbls. of instant coffee or espresso powder to the water. Frost with whipped ganache. Fill with instant whipped mousse. Chill before frosting Coat sides with the best chocolate cookie crumbs. Decorate top with the best chocolate curls or fine chocolate squares.
FYI - use the best chocolate you can afford. It makes a difference.
Thanks so much for your replies. I ended up making a Darn good chocolate cake recipe I found in the recipe section with a filling/frosting of dak chocolate and covered in chocolate MMF. I made an 8" two layers cake (based on Wilton's book for 20 ppl) but the client found it to little. I will try with other recipes in the future
