Hey,
Do you ever do a cake and just really struggle with it all the way through and then get to the end and think "man, I just hate this thing"? Such is the way I feel about the latest cake I did. It turned out nothing like I had in my head.
Lori If you look up my photos, it's the very first one top left. It has words on it.
Yes. This is the cake I posted STRICTLY as an example of "omg, what a crappy cake THIS turned out to be!" http://cakecentral.com/modules.php?name=gallery&file=displayimage&pid=1492272
I was SO excited about doing this design. The icing didn't work out right and I ran into all kinds of problems. HATED this cake! If I'd had time, I would have chucked the whole thing in the trash and started over.
But in always trying to find the positive in things, it *IS* a great example of "no matter how long you've been doing it, you're doing to have a Crappy Cake Day once in awhile!"
I knew which cake you were referring to before I even looked It's really not that bad. I'm too to put my "unfortunate" cake on here. It IS that BAD.
To the op, you're next cake will probably turn out so perfect you'll wonder why you ever felt this way Like Indydebi said "you're going to have Crappy Cake Day once in awhile!"
Yes, we ALL have those bad days. Unfortunately, my moods seem to tie directly to how good my cakes come out, so last night and this morning, I was feeling pretty bummed.
I made a 1968 candy apple red Mustang for a groom's cake. I was excited about this cake but....I ran into major issues with my fondant, it was too soft. The cake turned out ok, but I didn't really care much for it. However, the mother of the groom picked it up and she absolutely loved it. All I see are the bumps and flaws. Maybe I'll get brave enough to post it.
Then, I was making a simple, but last minute cake of 2 bats - so uninspiriing and not colorful at all. The mom liked it but it was just blah.
Oh yes - I had a cake weekend like that a few weekends ago....I didn't even take pictures of 2 cakes because I was so disappointed wiht how they turned out. But after that I had a couple of cakes that I was really pleased with so now my inspiration and motivation is back luckily. I wish you the best of luck with your next cakes!
Lorabell: I honestly can't see anything wrong with that cake it is very pretty and I am not just saying that. But of course we always see things that others can't so maybe I am missing something.
mamawrobin,
How did you know what cake I was referring to?? It must really suck!
Lori
NOT your cake. Indydebi's cake. It's the one she posted in another thread the other day. I'm so sorry that you thought I was referring to one of your cakes.
It's really not a bad cake at all. I think the gold on the lace looks a bit busy, but your details look great and your fondant looks fine too, for all that you said you were struggling with it.
LOL, Lorabell, I knew mamawrobin was referring to indydebs cake, I love her, but that cake was not her best display.
I shouldn't speak up because God knows, I'm still learning.
Indydeb, I love ya! And Lorabell, I thought your cake displayed the couples love and admiration for each other.
We all have bad cake experiences, it's just the nature of the beast! If you are having a lot of air bubbles in your fondant then check out how you are kneading it. When I first started out we were just working it and working it - twisting, turning, folding, etc. Not really using a "method". But as I gained more experience and watched more videos and demos I found that by kneading it like you would bread, and not incorporating a lot of air I resolved a lot of those issues. Now, I keep some corsage pins out when we are kneading and rolling and pin prick the bubble and roll and the teeny pin holes disappear.
I think that cake look great and showed alot of attention to detail. I'm sure the customer is thrilled with it. How could she not be?
Keep up the good work
I think everyone has those days, and I think it's probably a good thing that we do. I like indydebi's phrasing - 'Crappy Cake Days' - and if we didn't have one once in awhile, what else is going to motivate us to improve?
As to your cake, Lori, I'm having trouble seeing what's horrendously disappointing about it. I can see where the fondant might have given you a little trouble but, honestly, I don't know that the average non-decorating person would be able to tell.
I really like your numbers topper, that looks so elegant!
Thanks guys for your support. Not feeling as bad as I did. I don't know, I just know all the flaws in this cake and I wish so bad, I was better with fondant. I'm glad I'm not the only one who has bad "cake" days.
Lori
Your cake really isn't bad. I know how you feel. I always have these great ideas in my head and then they usually don't turn out the way that I want them.

I know this post is old but I had to jump in. Obviously, I've just experienced the same. I just had a cake where I took pictures of the cake, however, I didn't post them onto my fb page for the public to see because I wasn't totally pleased with it. Upon delivering the cake, the customer said everything was nice and wanted to work with me again in the near future. She emailed me tonight with feedback saying she was disappointed and overall the cake was OK. This customer from the beginning was very difficult that I didn't want to work with her and she caused me a lot of inconvenience being difficult. I also had other cakes the same weekend (from which the customer thought was flawless and wondered what happened to her cake that it was "OK") that I was extremely pleased with and I have my cousin's wedding cake next week that's causing me to bounce back and gain motivation. Things happen and while it's disappointing to receive not so well feedback I've just accepted from the beginning that I'm not going to please everyone. I'm learning from every experience, each cake I do and keep going from there. I also feel better hearing from Indydebi that there are just going to be some crappy cake days!
