WARREN The town council on May 20 gave resounding support to a plan to turn the Main Street School into the states first kitchen incubator.

The council voted unanimously to allow the town solicitor and attorneys for the project to work out a lease arrangement for the historic building. No timeline has been set for the $1 million-plus plan, but project creator Lisa Raiola of Bristol said theres much to be done before the kitchens open.

Theres a lot to talk about, she said Monday. Regardless, we see so much potential for this to really help Warren and establish something that will do a lot of good.

The plan is to build a series of kitchens, food processing areas, classrooms and community rooms in the vacant school building, and arm the incubator with state health certifications, teachers and food service professionals. Area cooks and entrepreneurs who have good ideas or good recipes can rent space and manufacture their wares in a state-certified, state of the art setting, all the while learning about business and becoming established and educated enough to go out on their own. Apart from that, the school would house a farmers market, a regular crafts and food market and would also house community space.

Though its an idea that has worked in other states, it would be Rhode Islands first incubator. Ms. Raiola said the plan has the potential to provide much-needed economic development in the East Bay.

This is awesome news!! I have been trying to find a place, with no luck at all. Do you know anything at all about this place? I looked into one in dartmouth that was $26 per hour, for making cakes that was just too high. I could see how it worked for other people making granola, and bulk items. Didn't make sense for me though.

I am so happy to hear this! Thanks for posting!
