Oh man I did it. I put the wrong filling in somebody's cake...buttercream instead of cookies n cream. It was a 3D purse cake and I had bought the Oreos, but its just force of habit to slap buttercream between the layers before carving. (I gotta stop offering fillings in 3D cakes. Its cramping my style.) I didn't realize my mistake until after the cake was nearly done...so emailed the customer along with an immediate Paypal refund of $25 and I said she could serve the Oreos with the cake????

She was not too happy with me. Accepted the refund without thanks and asked if there was anything else I could do, she didn't want the cookies. So I apologized and didn't think of it right away, but then called back with the idea of giving her a small cake in the proper flavor. She asked her daughter and they were okay, not thrilled, but okay with that and did thank me.

I feel really bad, I strive to keep my business reputation perfect and pleasing my customers all the time. I hate disappointing or upsetting anyone. Even though the filling seems like a little thing, I guess when someone pays premium prices, they deserve a premium product.

Oh well. I guess I'm only human....cake in the oven....life will go on.... (I guess I was all messed up after finishing my United Center cake yesterday....poor excuse but....)

Everyone makes mistakes, at least you own up to it, and make it right. thumbs_up.gif That is more then most people do. Also that is why there are refund policies !! icon_biggrin.gif I am also sending a cyber hug. I think you could use it. ((hug))

You are such a darling... your work always sets the standard for excellence and how you handled the situation is the ultimate in customer service. If you customer is still the least bit unhappy about the situation it is, from this point on, her issue.

It was an honest mistake. That could happen to any of us. You certainly made very reasonable offers to make up for it.

Aw thanks, you guys are so sweet.

Just took the freebie cake out of the oven....it looks weird, like too light and spongey or something. Whatever!!!! Guess its not my night!

Just as long as my decorated cakes all stay safe overnight and by tomorrow...can't have anything happening to them!

I just looked at the cake in question and I would be over the moon to recieve a cake like that whatever the filing.
I would be in seventh heaven if I ever made anything even half as good!

Aww thanks!

The extra cake I made them, made them happy. They said they'd order again in the future. Phew!

I doubt the lack of a few Oreos could change the beauty of the cake you created, nor the excitement of the recipient! Gorgeous!!!

I think that you handled it the best that could be done. If it was me I would probably of forgotten all together and not ever remembered and they would have been so disappointed when they cut into the cake and got a surprise.

I did that too. Forgot to put the sliced strawberries in. I remembered after standing back and looking at the best I'd ever done at smoothing out buttercream then saw the damn strawberries out of the corner of my eye. I took it apart. ugh! My buttercream didn't look the same after that LOL

I baked a TT cake the WRONG FLAVOR not long ago lol! I posted on here *panicking* and got great suggestions like you did. I ended up baking a smaller cake in the correct flavor as well. Originally, I could tell the mom wasn't thrilled, but when they came to pick them up, they LOVED them! Phew is right lol .

I found that being aware of my mistake made me want to go over the top on the original cake so I did, and it paid off! Looks like you knocked it out of the park! Glad it worked out.

wow...that cake looks real! They would be fools to not appreciate it. Everyone makes a mistake now and then. Just brush it off and keep your chin up.
Your work is tremendous.

Did that a few weeks ago. Made a wedding cake and forgot strawberry filling. I was so busy that weekend that I didn't even realize until the next day when I was filling a cake for a different order. At that point, I could do anything - the cake had already been served and eaten. Fortunately, the bride and MIL didn't mind a bit - got a very nice thank you note.

You cake is great and that lady is crazy for being a crab at you about it! People take things way to seriously- was the cake good? did it look great? did the guest love it? Of course- not one person at that party thought- gee where are the oreos!
