Hi, I used the tutorial on this site and it looked so great and easy. It was not easy for me.

The foam roller picked up small bits of buttercream as it went over the cake and deposited it on other colors. The buttercream itself was pocked and had tufts from where the roller had moved over it. I didn't use a crusting buttercream. My roller was brand new and totally clean and firm.

I think I have to thin the buttercream to achieve the effect but other than that, do you have any advice on how to fix this problem?? TIA!

Sorry to hear that happened to you. I hope someone has some ideas for you. I usually use a crusting buttercream so I just place waxed paper over the cake surface before rolling to prevent the icing from grabbing my roller.

My daughter made one using the star tip then she smoothed with a viva. It looked really good. She didn't make the "stars" very large and it smoothed out nicely.

the problem is that you HAVE to use a crusting buttercream when using the roller method! there is no way to smooth it with a roller if your icing is not COMPLETELY crusted over! That was your problem!!

Aha! I will have to give it another go using the crusting one. Thanks everyone for your help. I'll also use the stars idea...hmmm....never thought of using a tip like that.
