Hey everyone. Just throwing another fun question around.
How many of you made your own wedding cake?

I got married 2 years ago, and at the time didn't really do cakes, and had never touched fondant or tried a stacked cake. I work at a grocery bakery and a co-worker was going to make my wedding cake. She got fired the week of my wedding. She called me crying and we had to find another bakery for her to do my cake there after hours. She was a friend and i'm glad she made it for me, but..

I wish I could have done my own! icon_smile.gif Now that I've learned skills and have some more confidence, I have so many designs I wish I could have done.

Just wondered if anyone else has felt this way icon_wink.gif

I did my own wedding cake! It was the very first time I ever made and used fondant and gumpaste! It was also the first time I made gumpaste roses! It came out pretty good I think! For a first time that is!

When I got married to my first hubby 10 years ago, I didn't know jack-squat about cakes. Not only did I not make it.....I ordered it from the grocery store. icon_redface.gif The only thing I remember about it is that it had purple buttercream roses on it and I was happy that I was able to get purple on my cake. Oh, and it was chocolate cake, too, which my mom thought was weird. I don't think the cake sucked but....well...it was from the grocery store.

My future hubby & I are haphazardly moving towards a wedding-like event at some point in the near future. I'll be making our wedding cake not only because I want to but because my fella only likes cake when I make it. We're planning on a super informal wedding so I should be able to handle it. icon_smile.gif

My wedding was before I knew anything about cakes. It was a certified cake wreck. One of those, "brides asked for this... but got this instead..." deals.

I plan on making the wedding cake I wish I'd had then, had I known what I know now, for my 25th anniversary. Oh yeah, people are going to be talkin' about my cake for a long long time. icon_cool.gif

I made a 5 tier wedding cake - my first one, for myself. I wanted to have more than the standard wedding cake slices and it turned out really yummy. Chocolate with caramel chocolate filling. I iced it with stabilized whipped cream and just made it informal since it was an outdoors country wedding it looked fine.

I've gotten much better at decorating since then.

I made my cake 3 years ago - 3 square tiers of traditional fruit cake covered in marzipan and fondant with gumpaste tulips on top. I knew nothing about dummy tiers then so had enough cake for 250 people - we only had 50 guests, good job fruit cake keeps well!

This is a great question! I often wondered how many on CC made their own Wedding cakes. My 1st wedding cake bought at a bakery. The first wedding anniversary cake I made was for my grand parents and get this, I was in high school, I knew jack about making cakes, left out the butter in the frosting (LOL). They had to love me. I knew they never had a wedding cake, so I tried my best to give them one , a 5 tiered, Wilton push in crystal pillars, otherwise that cake would have been in the floor. Just imagine 7 people in a car with an assemble cake, thats how this one was delivered. Yes it made it there with no problems, remember I didn't know to put butter in the frosting(HA, HA, HA). My second marriage, and I don't plan to do this again, I made a 7 tiered wedding cake with a fountain, honeymoon was delayed a day . Thanks for the memories. icon_lol.gif

Many years ago I made mine. It was more like a trial run LOL. I learned alot about stacking cakes and having fun with them. It is a 2 tier center with stairs going down to a tier on each side to a heart shaped cake that had a photo of each one of our sons. The center had a glass church house and the topper was a carriage and horses with little bride/groom bears by it. The cake was cream colored with Purple/lavender flowers/accents. Just buttercream, I dont think I had even heard of fondant at that time. LOL. I will upload a photo into my photos. Oh the memories! LOL

If anyone want to see my wedding cake (circa 1993), see my photos. I just downloaded a picture. I wish I had a picture of the one I made in High School. If I saw it now, I probably wouldn't get off the floor laughing!

I have been married for 14 years & did not decorate cakes when I got married. I was pretty young too & just remember my MIL doing all the talking at the cake consultation. I looked at my wedding album recently to check out my cake now that I am making them & it's typical of the time, stacked on pillars, all buttercream.
Wouldn't it be pretty hard to make it when you have so many other things to deal with as a bride though?
But ya got me thinking, if hubby & I ever renew our vows I'll definitely make one! icon_wink.gif

I have only been decorating cakes for ten years. I was married almost twenty years ago so my mother in law hired a lady to make our cake. She did a beautiful job. I felt so bad for her because the day of our wedding her brother died and when she was delivering our cake she smashed the backside. She was crying when she was delivering the cake so we told her not to worry and turned the damaged side facing the wall. Nobody ever found out that the cake had a boo boo. LOL.

That's actually what got me into cake making. For our wedding 1 year ago (currently packing for anniversary trip), my husband and I wanted a very non-standard wedding cake. We both are avid bookworms, and wanted our wedding to reflect that. So, we invented a design for a cake that looked like a stack of antique books. Trouble was, it seemed like nobody could do it...so, despite everyone's objections that I was taking on too much in addition to other wedding planning, I started practicing making cakes, working with fondant, etc. It turned out that we found a wonderful cakestress who made our vision come to life, and was hands-down the most delicious cake I've ever eaten . . . but I was hooked, and I've been making cakes ever since. In fact, 5 months after our wedding, I made a friend's wedding cake (chocolate cake tiers, and pomegranate cheesecake), and I was much gratified, by the groom swooning over the flavor when the bride fed him his bite (he's quite melodramatic...eyes rolled back in his head, and he keeled right over on the floor), and everybody with a camera crowding around it to take pictures.....SOOOOOOOO HAPPY!

I can't even imagine doing my own cake as a bride -- waaaay too many other things to think about in the week before the wedding! I didn't know enough about cake decorating at the time to attempt it anyway, but I think even if had been an expert I would've preferred to hire someone else for that.

My wedding cake was awesome though; we did prioritize it in the budget because I've always been a hobbyist baker so I know the difference between a good cake and a bad one, and I've eaten far too many awful wedding cakes! And it was decorated exactly the way I wanted it also. icon_smile.gif

I made my own. I knew exactly what recipe I wanted and the only one who uses this recipe is a very expensive chef who has his shop very far away. I also wanted the decorations on the cake to match my dress...
It wasn't stacked/tiered but on a stand so I wouldn't have to worry about setting up on the day. I made and froze the cakes some time before the wedding so that I just had to cover in fondant and attach the flowers the day before the wedding.
It was only my second wedding cake but it turned out really good and tasted just the way I wanted it to. I could probably do much better now with regards to decorations but would have a hard time finding the time to do it.

I got married 7 years ago (and divorced this week icon_lol.gif ) and as I have always been baking I HAD to make my own cake. It was stressful but worth it. I had bought "The Wedding Cake Book" by Dede Wilson and made the Sour-Cream Cheesecake with caramalised apples. It was delicious. My Aunt's 50th Birthday was just a few months later and she insisted on getting this cake - she only got a 2-tier though icon_biggrin.gif

I'm so impressed that so many of you were able to make your own wedding cakes! I was married a LONG time ago and had no cake decorating skills at the time, so I did not even think about making my own wedding cake. I just remember how crazy I was the week before the wedding and I can't imagine how people can fit in making a cake with all those other details and worries. I guess I'm just too high strung for that!

Had cake made for my first wedding. Some little boy ran up beside decorator and smashed his hand in the cake when she was carrying it in. She was awesome I nevered noticed it at all. Second cake I did myself. Enjoyed it but would not recommend it. I did all decorating, cakes, set up, and clean up myself. 96 guest at wedding. Had hand surgery months before wedding, and they had to redo it 2 weeks before wedding. It was the last cake I did for 17 years. Too much pain. Just now getting back into cake decorating and learning about fondant. Loving it, alot less piping, hands are doing great. Oh happy day!!!!

I made my wedding cake when I got married this past New Year's Eve. I wasn't going to make my own cake, but once I decided on a design, I just thought, "I can do this - why pay someone else"! lol Anyway, it was a very simple design that I had seen on CC I think, so it really wasn't a problem at all. My partner made my husband's groom's cake and it turned out awesome.

Like a few others the reason I started getting into cake decorating was so that I could be prepared for making my own wedding cake this past September. I had a fairly simple wedding and wasn't looking to dole out tons of money on things, but I still wanted a multi tiered one of a kind cake. Honestly, I was more amped about the cake than the dress.

I used dummy cakes to make up some of the height, it also cut out alot of the stress as I was able to have them decorated well ahead of time. The only real tier (one VERY large one) I designed to have the simpliest elements so that it wouldn't take to long to do.

The cake itself was Devil's Food cake and whipped ganache flavoured with Kalua. The cake was definitly the main attraction at the wedding. I don't remember how many people came up to me and told me that it was the best cake they had ever had (that might have had something to do with me being the bride and all, but hey it still put a huge smile on my face). My officient even asked if I was interested in starting up a business arrangement with her once she found out that I made the cake myself. lol

I think deciding to make your own wedding cake is something a person really has to look at from a personal perspective. Some can't even image why you would take on such a huge stress when you have so much going on. To others having the oppertunity to hand craft such a prominent part of the celebration can make the day just that little bit extra special.

Why does everyone think being a bride is so full of stress?
Are most weddings those huge productions using money one doesn't have like one sees on TV?
-
My wedding planning was done by me, friends and family. The morning of the wedding was spent playing with my little brother and nieces and nephews to keep them occupied.

Aunts, mother, future mother-in-law were setting up the reception site (future mom-in-law's house) while the male relatives were pretending to help, bridesmaids were putting flowers out at the ceremony site (they told me to go away)... LOL.

An hour before the ceremony I washed up, put my dress on, brushed my hair and got in the car to go to the chapel.

No stress at all.

Is that so very different than most weddings?

I made my own wedding cake also. I had three stacked tiers, all simple, smooth fondant with a voile swag down the side. A simple topper and that was it. The fondant had to be flawless as there was nothing to cover up with. I also had a stress free wedding even with 6 kids to accomodate. The oldest 5 even went to school on the morning of my wedding, why did they need to be home when there was a perfectly good day at school to be had icon_lol.gif I set up my own venue, decorated and even preped the desserts. and managed to fit in a 2 hour hair appointment.

I made my mom's wedding cake when I was 15. We only had 10 guests or so. It was an angelfood cake frosted with whipped icing with daisies piped on it. It was cute for something a 15 year old did. Apparently I thought that made me an expert so I made my own wedding cake for my first marriage (I was 20). It was a large sheet cake with 3 different sized heart shaped cakes on it. I made some white chocolate candy clay roses and white chocolate leaves (this was 1990) and those were pretty but the rest of the cake was kind of a disaster. And I made about 4 times more cake than we needed! My 2nd marriage- I made the cake also. I had a few years of pastry chef experience and a few cakes under my belt. It was cute and simple, my favorite recipe from "Baking with Julia" -an almond cake by Martha Stewart. We only had about 20 guests. My 3rd (and last!) marriage a year ago- I made the cake again. And cookies, cupcakes and mini desserts. The cake was a tiramisu cake, covered in piped and baked meringue flowers. I wanted to do something I had never seen at anyone's wedding before. It was delicious! It was an appropriate size but we had alot left over because of the other desserts. There were about 100 guests. Did I mention that I also made all the food for all three weddings? Also alot of the decorations etc. I don't reccomend that!
