5-28-10 Friday Night Cake Club - Page 2

I am sitting here at work doing the overnight shift (9-7), having finished my Alice in Wonderland themed cake before I came in.

Tomorrow night I'm not working, so I have to stay up instead of going to bed when I get home, so I can go to sleep Sat night with the hubby. During those sleep deprived hours before bed I will start my topsy turvy cake that is due Monday morning. I can't decide if it's good that it is a topsy so I can excuse any sleep deprived off kilter-ness....or bad since I'm liable to make a topsy situation worse! icon_lol.gif

I've got 5doz cupcakes, 4doz petit fours, and two cookie cakes for this weekend.

Cookie cakes were super easy - one was just topped with a plain baby blue glace and the other was decorated. Done, knocked out, finished. The decorated one is in my gallery. I rather like it. icon_smile.gif

Petit fours cake is done, cooled, and settling. Filling & frosting tomorrow. I hope these come out well. Half will have a pomegranate molasses filling & vanilla glaze; the other half will have maple filling & glaze with a small piece of bacon on top. icon_biggrin.gif

Just took the last 2doz cupcakes out of the oven. Those just get a swirl & a sprinkle so I'll knock those out early in the morning. I need a bigger oven. icon_rolleyes.gif

Went by the cake store this afternoon and they've started carrying hi-ratio shortening. I made my first *real* batch of Sugarshack icing today and I AM IN LOVE. Yee haw!!!

icon_lol.gificon_lol.gif How about sharing those new "dipping tricks".

I'm not working on anything tonight. I'm home alone which rarely happens. I'm thinking about "playing around" with a dummy and see what I come up with.

I used a toothpick stuck in the bottom (my usual method), but this time I did 2 things differently instead of trying to slide them off the toothpick.

1) I left a a small spot around the toothpick bare of chocolate to test something a poster said about preventing blowouts. So far, it works great! Zero blowouts.
2) I covered a cooling racks with waxed paper and punched spaced holes in it. When I dipped one, I slipped the toothpick into the hole and pulled it out from beneath once the chocolate was set. Keeping your hands out of the way is tricky, but it was worth it! No more fumbling to get it off a toothpick/spoon/fork!

I took pics if you need a visual.

I hope this reads okay as the site is freaking out on me.

It's been so long since I have a chance to read the friday nite chat. It's so nice that my weekends have finally slowed down since all of our sports have finished for the school year. I have a three-tier wedding cake for next weekend. Two vanilla layers with strawberry filling and one spice cake layer with apple butter filling and brown sugar buttercream. Different but it should be good. Hope everyone has a great weekend! Let's all remember the soldiers that have lost their lives to give us the opportunities we have and never take them for granted. God Bless you all!!!!! thumbs_up.gif

I am a newbie, so right now I say I'm in my recipe testing stage.... I made a coconut cake I really liked, a freckled mocha cake filled with Bailey's Irish creme mousse, iced with chocolate SMBC. Last weekend I made the margarita cupcakes from the recipe on CC..... those were absolutely delicious! This weekend, I'm going to try Orange Dreamsicle.. no special decorating on this one. I have a 3-day weekend, and have a lot to do around the house. What kind of icing would go good on the Orange Dreamsicle cake?

I've got to clean out my spare room for all of the cake crap that I have been accumulating...... This site is so addictive and inspirational! I get on at work a couple times a day, then when I get home I get on again..... then just before bed, I check it out again! I have resorted to finding any excuse to make a cake! It's all I think about lately!

I have learned a lot just following the forum threads. this is truly a great place to be!

Orange Dreamsicle is one of my new favs!! It's awesome. You must use the filling Macsmom recommends, I used 1 pkg of pudding & it was perfect. Good iced in bc or some kind of whipped icing.

Well this is what my daughter did when she hijacked the kitchen-- I think I will let her have it more often if this is what she can do!

Thought " this won't take me long and then I'll head to bed" Ha. Should've known better, here i am yet 2 hours later still in my work clothes haven't really moved so much. What was I thinking.

Thanks for the suggestion, mbark. How do I find the filling recipe? I'm still learning how to navigate this site! It takes me a lot longer to find stuff than it should......

Delivered a Max and Ruby cake, baseball cupcakes and Memorial Day petit fours. Only thing left for the weekend is a cake shaped like a bus. I have a plan, I think. icon_confused.gif Definitely nervous about this one.

I am trying to shake off my "cake funk". I did a cake for on old friend's daughter's graduation party. I had trouble with fondant I colored purple turning blue. I ended up using up most of my fondant (and time!) trying to get the right color. The cake was a nice cake, but it wasn't the design we had talked about. I wasn't entirely happy with it and I think she was disappointed. I left her a voicemail and a facebook message asking how it went and how the cake was- no reply and it was 3 days ago. Of course I am obsessing over whether she liked the cake or not. Sigh, I'm just going to have to let it go so that I can move on. It just kind of sucked the enthusiasm out of me, you know? icon_sad.gif

I attended a wedding tonight (where I also did the cake) and it went SO LATE!!! Still had to finish matching "Squirt" (turtle from Nemo) cakes for twin boys when I got home...they aren't as identical as I'd like but hopefully close enough. Late night! Just finished and have to neaten the kitchen a bit before bed. (Almost 1:30am here...)

Tomorrow will have to start some prep work for a few big projects coming next week.
